I got my first tattoo on my upper arm nearly four years ago. It didn't hurt; it felt more like being scratched. I am still in love with that tattoo. It is rather small, around 2 inches in size. So I can easily show it in warm weather by wearing a sleeveless top, but can also easily conceal it, even if the sleeves are short.
The experience was so positive that I just got another one about a week ago, this time on the back of my shoulder. That one hurt a little when the artist began with the outlining, but in a few minutes, I got used to the feeling. A couple spots were more sensitive, like when he was close to the bone. All in all, the experience was not very painful. Afterward, the area felt really hot for a couple hours, but then that feeling faded, and I barely noticed the tattoo. Until a day or so ago, when it started to itch (it's part of the healing process). This one is considerably larger, and once again, it can be easily displayed or hidden, depending on my preference.
If you're thinking of getting a tattoo, as everyone else has asserted, make sure it is something you want to live with for the rest of your life. Laser removal is expensive and doesn't always work. The best option, I think, is to get a custom design that has a deep meaning to you, that won't change, and/or a design that symbolizes an important part of your personality. Even if you put it in a visible spot, I think a tattoo is something intensely personal.
I got my first tattoo to symbolize something I love in my life, that won't ever change. The second tattoo is a combination of two loves, as well as a memorial to my late father.
I apologize for being long-winded; I hope this helps.

The amount of pain that getting a tattoo causes all depends on 1) location of the tattoo, 2) how well your skin takes the ink, and 3) how high your threshold for pain is. I have 5 tattoos and I don't regret a single one....the main reason for that is that I took my time in deciding what I wanted and where I wanted it. Tattoos should also mean something to you as well. I got my tattoos to symbolize my views on life and what certain things mean to me. It's all about self-expression.

i have 4 tattoo's. i wont lie to you, while they are actually doing the tattoo it does hurt some, but the pain stops when the needles are not under your skin. it also depends on what part of the body you are getting the tattoo. The area where you get the tattoo put is a little tender once it is done for a little while. Look at it this way when you cut your skin it hurts for a bit, but feels better after time and healing. don't let this discourage from getting one, i plan on getting more.
Just remember to choose wisely cos its with you forever.

I have over 40 hours worth of ink on my body. the amount of pain is somewhat dependent on location of the body, but I think the length of the session has more to do with it. usually within just a few minutes, the area will start to go numb, and you may be able to fall asleep during the tattoo... although for me, once i reach hour 5 or so, all my nerve endings seem to wake up again and all i can think is, "are you done yet?!"
i don't regret any of them.
there are many reasons why i got my tattoos. 1. i just like the way they look. 2. each one has a meaning and/or represents a certain milestone in my life. 3. well, i kind of debated over the third one... i read an article about women with body art, and the link to their physical or emotional scars. at first i was offended that just because i enjoy body art that i must have endured trauma in my life. but, after thinking about it for a while; i decided, "so what? if this is how i choose to deal with my life events." people have been documenting their life's tragedies on their bodies for centuries... from native Americans to ancient Egyptians.

some of my tattoos did hurt real bad. some of them barely hurt at all (because they only lasted minutes, not hours)
i have gotten three of my tattoos covered up. yet i regret none of them. it's just that i realized that tattoos can be so much more than flat plain and blaah looking. so when i found my wonderful tattoo artist i had him make my skin beautiful and cover up my old tattoos. but i never regretted getting them. i still have the memory of getting all of them and why i got them.
some people say that all people who get tattoos regret them... i think the people who regret them didn't have a good tattoo artist and their tattoo now looks like crap. but whatever. do what you want to do and good luck with your tattoo.

I only have one small tattoo on my back. It hurt a bit, but was tolerable. You have to be absolutely sure about the design and the location. It's better if you choose a place that you can hide lets say to go to work, but it shows wearing a cute summer top. I don't regret I got my tattoo. It defines me. But one is enough

I have 2. The first one was on my shoulderblade. it is about4 by 4 inches and hardly hurt at all. because it was a militarytattoo and I am proud to be in the military, I dont regret it at all. the second is a celtic phoenyx on myshoulder/upper arm. it hurt significantly more especially where the bone in the shoulder was hit but i would and will do it again.

A Tattoo is an outward expression on ones self. Some cultures use them as reminders of events that happened in the past. I would advise if you do get one to be sure you know what you want to get,Tattoo's can be covered but they take alot of Black or Dark Inks to do it. Also I would look into an original piece, you dont want any of the "wall candy" thats in every parlor around the world..be original. As for if they hurt or not it depends on your tolerence to pain. They do start off a little tenter then the pain seems to faid to a numbing feeling. I say go for it. I have a number of them, 3/4 sleeve on my left arm, 1/2 sleeve on my right, a back piece, 2 on my neck, 2 on my right leg and one on my chest and I dont regret any of them.

pain is dependent on where you get it on your body. obviously getting a neck tattoo is going to be a bit more painful than one on an arm. but pain isnt usually too bad, kinda feels like bee stings.
I got my first tattoo out of curiosity, the rest for fun.
I've had tattoos for three years, with no regrets. Just make sure getting a tattoo is what you really want, and not just a whim.
