It depends on what you are cooking. I brown hamburger or sausage before putting it in a crock pot to make chili, spaghetti sauce, etc. For chicken, beef (non-ground), or pork, I usually put it in the crock pot with whatever seasonings I am going to use and do all of the cooking there. Typically meat needs to cook 6-8 hours on low in order to be done.

You can put the meat in raw but it should cook/stew in the pot separately from your veggies for at least an hour depending on the temp and the type of meat. The meat should be within a 1/2 hour of being cooked well prior to adding veggies so that they dont overcook.

Chicken in the crock pot with veggies is awesome and healthy!

The oil from the meat usually negates the use of any type of oil-stick with herbs for flavor and they can be thrown in with the meat. Garlic is a good one. They can be removed before adding the veggies or left in for a special treat.

Bon Appetit!

You really should have browned the chicken first and then put it into the pot. Is it chicken on the bone or like chicken breast cut into small pieces? If it is chicken on the bone I don't see it cooking fully in four hours. Stick a knife into one of the pieces and see if it is still raw or cooked right through and hot. If you're not sure if chicken is safe to eat, the best thing is to throw it out and buy take-away. Its just not worth getting sick over. If you still intend on eating it no matter what, you should rinse it in vinegar. The vinegar will kill any bacteria. I would throw it away If unsure though.

I would fry the burger until almost done then drain grease before it goes in the crock. Otherwise all that grease will be in your food...yuk! That's what I do when I make chili in my crock pot. I think chicken would be ok raw in the crock.

For chicken and hamburger make sure that it's already cooked first. You can always get the precooked stuff. As long as it's precooked or cooked you can use it. That's for Chicken and Hamburger. Now for ham or a roast and things I have used a crock pot and everything tuned out great. Just make sure it's precooked. Better to be safe then sorry. Good Luck

the crock pot cooks the meat, so you should put it in raw. BUT crock pots take hours to cook...so be sure you leave it in long enough.

I always put mine in raw, including chicken beef and pork. I put the veggies right in there too. If it is less than 4 hours cook on high, if more cook on low. I have never had any problems.
