My son has facial swelling to dog saliva (he is nearly 4yo). He has had alot of contact with a small dog of late & seems to be having less & less of a reaction. Is it possible that you can decrease your allergic response by increased exposure???? Ive not been able to get an answer to this anywhere.

That sounds like desensitization to me. Normally, that's a good thing. However, with a child that young, and a reaction that involves swelling, I wouldn't rely on desensitizing him. Singulair, Claritin syrup, and other prescriptions are very effective at controlling allergic reactions. It's worth a visit to the pediatrician. And so you know, I've had the same reaction to dogs since I was a small child. As I've gotten older, I've been desensitized then had increased sensitivity repeatedly. Medication is the only thing that has consistently controlled my allergies.

Some people do out grow allergies. It has less do to do with exposure and more to do with normal changes in the body over time.

Yes it is possible. One other thing that may have been the problem is if your son in any way scratched his face prior to or after the dog licked him.

absolutely. It is called desensitization. Does not always work.
