I think the purpose for your question is that interstates are highways/freeways that are continuous throughout several states, like Route 66 so why does Hawaii have them? In that case, interstates really serve no purpose in Hawaii because we are a chain of islands and not connected to any other land. But because we are a State of the U.S. therefore we have to be americanized in some way - - things that are obviously the same on the mainland. Although they are called interstates no one in Hawaii addresses them as interstates when giving directions. We just say which highway (1, 2, or 3), the direction, and the off ramp to take. Hope this helps.

Oahu has interstate like conditions but technically that is not what they are.

Interstate highways in the USA were designed and constructed with defense funds...Once constructed, they are maintained by local, state and national tax revenue

The thought being that in a National emergency, they will be used to ferry troops and equipment quickly...That is the same thought on Oahu.

In event of a military emergency, troops and equipment can be moved quickly where they are needed.

Thus, Oahu has an "Interstate" highway.

They are there b/c there is a lot of traffic after work hours and if they didn't have them then everyone would be stuck for hours. The highways on Oahu are H1, H2, and H3. They also will take you all the way around the island and show you water the whole way. Beautiful sites. :)

The highly populated island of Oahu, where Honolulu is, needed freeways and the Hawaiians got the federal government to pay for them, and the interstates are federal highways

Interstates are highways within the state. Intrastates are highways that run through several states or across the country.

they were made so troops from around the island could quickly get to places, for example the H3 was made so that troops from kaneohe marine base could quickly get to pearl harbor in case of emergency because when pearl harbor was bombed there was no H3 and troops from kaneohe marine base could not reach pearl harbor fast enough to be able to help.

HA, good question, funny fact. But, really they are quite useful for getting places unless you are stuck in H1 rush hour traffic!
