Besides waiting for the police to get back to you while you sit at home helpless and stressed out, what can you do to find a missing person, or someone who should have arrived home nearly a day ago?

You start tracing their journey from where they began, validating each stop or likely spot they would have hit. If they're driving, how far would they have gone before having to stop for gas or dinner? That's where you check to see if anyone saw them.

You call their credit card companies to see when and where the last charges came in from, and you contact their cell phone company to see if it's been used, where, to who, how long, etc.

Depending on their age, risk level, etc. it IS a good idea to keep someone near the home in case the missing person returns or tries to call. Other friends/family can walk areas the person may hang out or was last seen with fliers, etc. Check credit card usage, cell phone usage and don't overlook gas stations, coffee shops, etc. to go and ask if they have seen the person. Take a photo or two to jog memories. Ask drive throughs and minimarts to check surveillance tapes for the vehicle make/model, etc... most businesses tape over security tapes within 7 days or so, so make a list and call, stop by or make it a point to get the word out through the local media right away.

Good luck.

PS: Stay on your law enforcement officer to keep the case rolling. If you don't get a good response right away, go to their supervisor. If thta doesn't help, go to the next level which is the chief and then the mayor, city manager, etc... don't underestimate the media, too.

Either the missing person has run up against some foul play - (which the police are probably best at sorting out. BUT you might search your mind for clues as to the persons movements, associations etc. and follow those up)
OR the person has chosen to become missing. (again, what do you know about why they may have done this?)

Focus your loving energy toward the person.

After reporting to the police, you can find his/her friends and the people whom the missing person met recently. Then, you can seek the help of media (TV, radio, and newspaper), and you can also post posters on things like posts and walls.
