On November 10, 1983, at the Plaza Hotel in New York City, Microsoft Corporation formally announced Microsoft Windows, a next-generation operating system that would provide a graphical user interface (GUI) and a multitasking environment for IBM computers.
Top View was released in February of 1985 as a DOS-based multitasking program manager without any GUI features. IBM promised that future versions of Top View would have a GUI. That promise was never kept, and the program was discontinued barely two years later.

Windows 1.0 was released on 20th Nov 1985 and the hardware requirements were 256KB of RAM, DOS 2.0 and two floppy drives, two years late.
The retail price was $100, which is worth about $177 in today’s money - the same as Windows XP Home.

The man behind the idea was Bill Gates .

The first version came out in 1985, Windows 1.01. As for the inventing of Windows, the concepts about windows, icons, desktop, friendly user interface, etc. were invented at XEROX PARC. Latter Apple made something similar, but better with the help of former employees from XEROX. And finally, Microsoft made their clone too, which got them fame, money, and a lot of lawsuits :)
