Take a clove of garlic, snap it and rub it on the sore so the juice goes on it. It will sting a bit but it does work, keep doing this periodically. I was getting one the other day and I did this - the sore never came up!
Also good because it is natural.
Just dont smell of garlic before your date!!!

This is real bad but it seems to work for the short-term. Put some toothpaste or noxema on the cold sore until the stuff inside comes to surface, wear it overnight if you have to. Usually the cold sore has disappeared or shrunken in size by morning. I would then either pop it if there is pus or sanitize the area with alcohol or astringent and conceal it with make-up before the date. The long-term consequence may be a small scar from popping it, other than that, it should be perfectly safe. If you don't want a scar, don't mess with it, just apply the drying out formulas.

I used to use Abreva, which works really well. It works pretty fast; especially if you get it on ASAP. You can get it at any drug store. I've also found that Carmex (also avail. at drugstores) helps to cammouflage them so that they are not so noticeable.
Now, I have a prescription for Zovarax topical cream and I am getting on prescription Valtrex soon. If you get them a lot, I would suggest Valtrex. I haven't tried it yet but I hope it works!

Use A&D ointment. It works for me. But do not meddle with the coldsore - it only gets bigger. Just leave it alone.
There is another steroid ointment (forgot the name) it works wonders - ask your pharmacist. I have a small tube. It looks like a half a pencil. I wish I could simply loan it to you.
Put it on before going to bed. Just one dab will do. Do not lick it even unconsciously. It disappears the next morning.

Use Carmex. That usually takes care of my cold sores and canker sores in about a day or two.

Have you tried Zilactin?
I am afraid Carmex won't do anything. Pepto Bismal, that's a new one... if your sore is open, please do not kiss the friend anywhere, as you will pass along the herpes virus.
