Hi,
To go into detail, the dogs should be genetically sound vet approved and then when and if you do breed, the vet bills are enormous if you do it right. Then you can lose puppies no matter how time and money you put into it, it should only be done by a dedicated person who wants to improve the breed and isn't in it for profit.

For an example, lets say that there are 10 people in your aria that want a nice Field Trial dog. Two litters of puppy's and you have satisfied that market, and any future breedings will only produce unwanted pets.
Well,, that real good Field Trial female that you bought cost you $1,500 to $3,000 to buy as a puppy. Over the course of 4 years of training and campaigning in order to earn a FC title you will spend approximately $50,000.
Then you will need to pay $1,500 for frozen seamen for each litter, and it will cost another $500 per litter to have it implanted. So without even feeding your dog yet, you have $57,000 invested. Then you sell your 10 puppy's for $1,000- $3,000 each. This means that the very best you will do is go into the hole $20,000 to $30,000.
So much for trying to do it with high end dogs. But, what all this did was to make it so that you only spent $20-30 thousand to participate in the sport of running Field Trials instead of over $50,000 with your dog, and you produced your next Field Trial dog allong the way (which was your real reason for doing a breeding)

Try to do it with cheap dogs and you will find that while the financial loss is less, the ratio of loss will remain the same.

I am hoping you're not thinking in terms of popping out puppy after puppy after puppy after puppy. Then I would have to agree with what everybody is saying and say no that's wrong, shame on you, that's puppy milling and it produces poor breeding.
Most breeders (except for those evil puppy mill breeders) do it for the love of the dog more than the money. They are out there to produce quality dogs (or supposed to be).
You get money when your dog has puppies, but after you look at what you have spent on the dogs you have bought, and the puppies, the vet bills, AKC reg, dog insurance (since your a breeder you may want this), then you are thinking I may keep a pup and find another dog for breeding... It may take some time to make some money. Then it's not large sums of money. You will still be paying the vet bills with it, poking some back for dog emergencies, and then you may have some extra, but not much!
If you are seriously thinking about becoming a breeder, please contact some top breeders in your area. Not the guys down the street who had puppies and sold them. And also talk to you vet. It takes alot of work, dogs are like kids in so many ways, and you are looking at having lots and lots of kids around you! But cute furry kids!

A very well known homily passed around dog shows is: the only way to make a small fortune breeding dogs is to start with a large fortune.

"Is dog breeding a lucaritive bussiness?"

Generally no, unless you're willing to do it poorly.

No, it is costly, time consuming and hardwork. Any monies made go right back into the dogs to cover costs of health tests (OFA/PennHip, CERF/PRA, thyroid, etc), general well pet exams & vaccinations, food, showing, etc.

No. It is a drain on our economy.

It contributes to the 7 million pets that are euthanized every year because there simply aren't enough homes.

Please don't breed. Have your dogs spayed or neutered.

If you aren't convinced, please visit your local shelter first and ask them the same question.
