Let's say a 15 y/o girl is dating a 21 y/o man. If the girl gets pregnant, should there be a law automatically charging the man with statuatory rape regardless of what her parents say about it?

Just a little more info, the best I understand most state laws. While the age of consent varies by state, a common misconception is that the age is set in stone. For instance, in Missouri, the age is 14, but until the minor reaches 18, the partner can't be more than three years older than the minor.

Yes because not all parents can be counted on to make good decisions.

It might even be a different thing if the boy were 17 because there would still only be a two-year age difference.

There is a giant age different between a girl 15 and a young man of 21. On top of that, a person of 21 should be capable of understanding the laws, understanding that he's too old for a girl of 15, and just behaving according to what is moral, what is good judgment, and what the laws say.

If the young man is mentally slow then that would have to be his defense in court.

The girl's parents could have thought the relationship was fine and could be too stupid to realize the developmental and emotional issues associated with a girl of 15's behavior; so the law can't get involved with what parents like or don't like in this situation.

Yes. The law is that a child under the age of 16 cannot have sex. The 21 yr old has abused this wether he meant to or not. What is the point of having laws that can be bent for some people and not others. The parents are irrelevant, either way this girl has ended up with a child at 15, no matter what now her life has dramatically changed, even is it was planned or the parents are happy about it, the law is the law, it's there for a reason and even if you don't agree with it, you should still stick to it

Um. Yes. The only kind of 21 year old man that would WANT to have sex with a MINOR is a man who does not have the self-confidence to go after a woman his own age. A 15 year old is someone who would look up to him, therefore, it is a big boost to his confidence.

That's just gross.

Yes. 15 y/o girls are not mature enough yet to be dealing with a 21 y/o man. The man is taking advantage of her youth, immaturity and social inexperience. It's even worse if he gets her pregnant.

Trust me, I know how tempting it may be to some to rationalize, but there really is no justification for it and he really does belong in jail.

Im no expert about stuff like this but I think the guy will be held responsible and will answer to the law and so is the parents... 15 is not a legal age...

Yuck!! Can't he get a girl his own age without resorting to a child? The child would not be old enough or mature enough to consent to sex with a much older man, so in my mind it would be rape.

I think that in regards to the law if one is passed they need to make a provision for those people who:

It's just a jump to the left

And then a step to the right

With your hands on your hips

You bring your knees in tight

But it's the pelvic thrust

That really drives you insane

Let's do the Time Warp again

he would go away for a long time because she's only 15 and the best way around that would be for her not to have him on the birth certificate until she becomes of age, she would say that she didn't know who the father is to protect the man that she cares for :) :) :)

I agree. A 21 year old man who is having sex with a 15 year old girl belongs in jail, whether he gets her pregnant or not.
