Grains are what I'd recommend anyone to eat. They give loads of energy and they are very fast digested. If you eat meat, for example, in order to get energy, you'll be falling asleep in no time because meat stays in the stomach for about 6 hours (even more) and in that mean time the stomach is TRYING to digest it so all the oxygen from the brain is consumed in the digestion process. => You will feel sleepy. Just think of antilopes and lions. Antilopes don't get tired when they're chased by a lion, right? Lions do because they eat meat. Grains will only do you good! Besides, they have no cholesterol at all. (veggies never do). PS: Grains don't increase the risk of cancer so eat grains as much as you'd like. You'll only live longer. Amen!

This is not true.
Human beings actually can digest almost ANYTHING edible.
It helps is you eat a varied diet, but whole grains are a good foundation for a healty life.
Humans have survived and raised generations of healthy children, solely on grains, when meat was scarce or not culturally acceptable.
If you eat whole grains, also try to eat lots of green leafy vegies, so you get adequate folate -- this prevents cancer and birth defects.

I think I´ll have to calm down a bit (HA!) before I try to answer this one.
One nutritionist whose column I read, said that if you were to take away all other foods, and leave him only one thing to eat-from a NUTRITIONAL standpoint, he would just eat oats! Now for some that seems a bit extreme! (and it is). Thank God, it hasn´t come to that yet. But I believe SINCERELY that whoever told you that is off on some very extreme tangient. Look around you, what do people eat? GRAINS. Take away the sugar (positivly bad for the digestion) and other fillers and what have you got? Carbohydrates, minerals, fiber -in breakfast cereals for example. What is the staple of Asia? RICE!, a grain. What do we eat all over the world, practically, Bread -made from wheat: a GRAIN! Don´t they call it the "staff of LIFE"! Well, ok, maybe not "the staff of digestion", Ha! (Granted, when you refine and bleach it, to make it more palitable, you also remove food value, and make it harder to digest!) And what did the Chinese bring us by way of Italy (Scuza! Pero E Vero!) You guessed it PASTA! also made from GRAINS.
The problem is not the grains, you need them, the problem is what you´re gonna DO to them. If you surround them with oil and shovel them in un-chewed, granted, youre probably gonna have problems with your digestion´. If you keep them rather simple, and take time to chew them well (carbohydrates are digested in the mouth, from saliva, not the stomach) and don´t try to mix every kind of Tom Dick and Harry (Hairy) food type at once, you´ll probably have better than normal digestion.
Any food and nutritionist protagonits will tell you that when you make a radical switch in your diet, (for example, youré changing from a low-fiber, refined flour and tonsa meat diet, to a high fiber and whole grain and salad diet), your digestion will do some bumps and grinds for a few days, until it becomes accustomed to healthy eating. But that´s normal; You´ll get used to it! As your body becomes accustomed to healthy food. If you don´t, hey , nobody´s makin´ you eat it. You can always leave the things out you just can´t possibly hack.
Personally, I don´t "eat to digest", I "eat to live" -If I know it´s good for me, and I don´t have some terrible aversion to it or the experience that it has some explosive effect on my digestion -case in point: Tuna cooked in milk sause. (Mama- mia!)- I just eat it ´cause I know it´s good for me! Basta! And I´ve survived till now (I´m 58!)
My mom has her bowl of oatmeal nearly every morning, and she´s 86 and they still let her drive on the freeway- LEGALLY!
The main point of eating is not digestion -though we all hope we will, the main point of eating is nourishment. Kick out the grains and you´re gonna be starving yourself of what you need, maybe what you need most!
