I met a wonderful chinese girl 2 years ago and she came to live with me in england, well she just cant master the language at all. Ive spent thousands on sending her to night school and do my best to help her but all she has learnt in 2 years are the words yes, no and cup of tea. Trying to communicate is a nightmare it just doesnt look like she will ever learn english and i must admit my chinese isnt very good either, but she came over here to learn the language but its just not happening, could this relationship work?

First why would you get a foreign girlfriend if oral skills is very important to how you view your relationship? You should have thought of this first hand before you have taken her and live with you for two wasted years of nothing. You can help her more by not ever speaking chinese to her again. She will come to her senses that in order to understand you she has to learn the language seriously. Otherwise where does your money goes? Did you ever check ask the teacher in the night school she's attending? What if, she has chinese classmates there as well so instead of learning english language she ended up chatting with them instead. Relationship works if there's true love involve. I don't know how you view yours and her. Well you better think of the consequences if she's gone. It's really up to you. Goodluck! lol

I suppose it could work if you really like the girl, but if you're getting really annoyed by the fact that she can't speak english, then tell her. Maybe she doesn't really *want* to learn english, for one reason or another. Maybe the night schools aren't working, and she should try college courses on the language or something.
Obviously, everybody knows that communication is important; give this relationship a few more weeks or months if you can, and explain to her that your relationship is strained by lack of communication.
English is a difficult language, but she should be able to learn much more than three phrases in 1-2 years. I know about 20 different Japanese phrases, just from watching Japanese TV once in a while.

Is tough to learn a new language especially at her age at this time to pick up a new language.
I saw a Jackie Chan interview the other and he was frustrated in his English communication when he was in Hollywood to shot a film. What he did he hired a high school kid and I think he/she is 8th, 9th grade student for 4 - 5 hours a day just to talk to him to show him how to speak in English language as well as grammar and pronunciation. I do believe this will work for him because you are talking to someone that you are not afraid of and probably will be much easier to learn from someone that is younger than your age. You can also structure your session related to day to day life such as go to super market shopping, order food, how to ask direction etc ... make sure keep it fun without any pressure.
Please don't give up if you LOVE her
Good Luck

ahh, both of you should suck it up (pun intended), and learn to speak the other's language. It's not that damned hard. Speak three myself and enough to get by in six or seven others. The hardest part is getting started. By anybody can do it, at least if they have a normally functioning brain.
It's all a matter of priorities. Set aside an hour a day for it. Avail yourself of whatever help is available, and just do it.

attend one of these night school classes with her to see if it's really the right thing and maybe talk to her professors to see what might be the causes for her lack of progress and how you could solve them. try to get her a job that involves very little knowledge of English, but exposes her to English speaking people. last, but not least, encourage her to make friends with other Chinese people who have learned English, it is quite possible they might help her with it. but, whatever you do, don't let go of her simply because you're frustrated by her speaking skills.. work on it together and you are bound to find a solution. good luck :)

Have you ever watched the first season of Lost? There's a Korean woman who speaks better English than I do, and has for years. It was like the last episode of the season before her husband realized it...
Food for thought...lol
Besides, I'm sure there may be other skills you can focus on to make up for the lack of her "oral" skills. Or, you could just focus on the development of the other oral skills that don't involve verbalization.

Spent thousands???? She probably know's more words than you think. Unless she's a total idiot incapable of learning. She may just be using you.
Asian women are very crafty. She may very well know the language very well and is hoping to dump you in the near future once she's gotten all she can get out of you.

Social skills is a 2-way component, keep in thoughts. do not really communicate about your self yet take the time to ask about the different human being besides. Oh, and keep in thoughts the guidelines of ideal etiquette. That looks to reveal human beings off.
