Greetings,
I'd like to see as much of a country as possible, so which country is cheaper to travel around in? I'd like to attempt surfing or at least visit the beach quite frequently, and have plenty of other sights nearby, so which city would one recommend? I'd like to avoid cold/wet weather, since there will be plenty when I come back to Chicago in Dec. and I would not mind avoiding expensive cities. Also, I'm extremely nervous about the education systems being way different from the United States' system. At which universities would I have to worry less about ruining my GPA? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks for your time!

Just thought I should add that I also love indie rock and wouldn't mind seeing bands once in awhile while abroad ;)

Australia is the go if you want to avoid the cold.
A great place to live is the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. The University of the Sunshine Coast has a good reputation but is still quite relaxed.
It is a cheap place to live, right on the beach, warm all year round and a good University a few kilometres from the beach.
Good plan all round I'd say!

If you want to avoid cold/ wet weather, Australia is your place at the moment, we're in a major drought, haha.
The universities are very used to having international students so you don't need to worry about 'ruining' scores I don't think. Sydney (New South Wales) is super expensive to live in so I'd avoid that but most other cities should be half rasonsable. Unis in Southern areas Victoria and South Australia might be a bit cold if you're wanting to stay away from that sort of weather as is the ACT in winter and Tasmania - well that's always cold (don't deny it, Taswegiens, you know it is!) Given what you're wanting to do and the weather you want, Universities in Queensland might be the go for you. Check out realestate.com.au for accomodation prices in the area if that helps.
Have fun!

If you're coming in our winter and want to avoid the rain, then I would recommend not going to Auckland.
However, apart from that, Auckland is a great city and Auckland Uni is one of the top ranked in the world, coming in ahead of some of your Ivy League ones like Brown.
It is however not the cheapest place to live.
The surf can be great but would be cold and kind of rough in the winter.
However, I would say New Zealand is easier to travel around in than Aussie, and being a much smaller country, you would get to see alot more of it.
I cant really tell you much about anywhere in Aussie, except that my friend is at the University of the Sunshine coast in Queensland, and they have Kangaroos roaming around the campus!!

Either one is good. UNI's are good in Australia. The top ranked University in Australia is of course the Australian National University which is in Canberra (the capital). This university is also ranked in the top 20 in the world so you'll be in the right place. Australia has beautiful beaches at the moment. Nice places to visit. Good shopping and an interesting multicultural society to immerse yourself in.

I'm an Aussie surfing boy too and it's great anywhere on the east coast of Australia.
Palm beach on the gold coast is good, and there's also another great spot just north of coolangatta.
Good luck man and enjoy the surf!
