One thing I don't understand is....Someone made up "GOD", why can't people understand this .... Mind over matter. Someone tells you something, your mind will automatically send signals to your brain. Like how people have a outter body experience, thats what they're told, so if they pass out, thats what they think automatically., is a bright light ect. Think about it - we don't even use close to half of our brains!Think of what we could be capable of it we had that talent to learn how... We would be gods.
Plus why don't people understand the religions that involve god were made up! I could go make a religion, and bull **** my way through it with false evidence, and i would have followers, because people are weak, and need to believe in stuff, or they crack. Because their minds can't comprehend what the real big bad world is about.... Who agrees'?

Sorry, I disagree. Someone didn't make up God. If God is a creation, He is the creation of many 'someones' and the result of an evolution of pre-existing religious figures.

The notion that we don't use half our brains is also invalid. The brain evolved alongside the body... the bits we don't use are not some magic stuff the fates sent us for future use, they are the parts we don't use anymore. For instance, there might be a bit of your brain which controls your tail. You may have noticed that you don't have a tail. Well, your ancestors did, and this chunk of brain might still have a 'use'... just not a relevant one.

I don't see how stretching our capacities and talents would make us gods. God, by definition is ALL seeing and ALL knowing. We just don't have that kind of potential locked up in some section of brain.

Why don't people understand that religions that involve God were made up? As opposed to the religions which don't involve God? Nah - that's being cheap. Lets look at this another way. Math is also made up. The internet is made up. Human beings are made up of food-stuff and water and particles. That something, someone or some force is made up does not invalidate its existence. Two people came together and made you, right? You believe in yourself, right? Well, some people look at all the things around them and find just as impossible to believe in no God as you find it impossible to believe in God. True, they've made a decision to believe and science hasn't produced God for them. On the one hand, you take this as evidence that there is no God, or that God is an invention. On the other hand, it's just as possible that all this (I'm looking around my room right now, but feel free to imagine a lovely field or some kind of happy childhood memory) isclear and obvious proof of the existence of God almighty - who else could have done so much?

Yes, you could make up a religion, but I doubt you'd have as much support as you allude to. Christianity, for instance, has really good source material. Not only is the Bible an interesting read, but it makes wonderful promises to people and instills a good amount of fear as well. It says things that ring true because, by and large, it's a well written text. There are many authors and some have a real flare for drama and adventure while others are positively poetic. Then you have a whole host of support... opening acts like Dostoevsky, Milton, even Blake when he's in the mood. People come to Christianity through great art, through powerful music, though intense and well thought out philosophy. That doesn't mean that you have to believe it or that all these sources make valid arguments. It does mean that your opposition on this matter are represented in the form of 2000 years of very good cultural contribution and some top notch genius.

Finally, people are a bit weak. We're weak without each other, without love and understanding. We're weak without community and the rituals that bind community. We're weak without belief because it leads to depression, loneliness and despair. I kinda like that about us... that we're strong enough to reach out - even if there's nothing on the other end. We're strong enough to make a go at believing in each other and in a higher power without positive, perfect proof. I'm hoping God likes that about us too.

So, I don't agree, but I like you for asking the questions, for caring and for reaching out to a community. I like that you're thinking and reacting to the hypocritical nature of church, of religion and of passive believers and fools.

Best wishes,
Nicole

People believe in god to give them hope and to not worry about a thing.
They fear death because they realize they are naive.
They wish a god was real so that all their problems will be wished away.
That's why they pray even if most of their prays don't come true they still need to believe to believe that they will die in a nice place and that's where their imagination created Heaven so their ignorant mind has good thoughts of the future.
The Bible was man made to get followers to believe.
The ignorant religious nutcases will realize once they die that life isn't what they expected and theirs no god or their so called hero Jesus Christ.

People like you have to pretend that He's not real so that you don't have to pay attention to the fact that you're on your way to Hell. That's your choice, but it's a poor one. I'm not going to bother to try to convince you that He's real since you seem to have made up your mind and you'll just call me a liar if I tell you that He does exist.

Furthermore, by showing an interest in becoming a god yourself you have some serious ego issues if you think you need worship when you don't even deserve it.

Also, Bobbert has an excellent point. If you are an atheist why would you have any interest whatsoever in becoming a god yourself? Would you believe in yourself?

ONE PART of Ciniful's answer is right. See below for quote:
"And now, little by little, you see religion being phased out more and more. The population of freethinkers grows day by day as people realize that science is now accurate enough to negate religion and god as unnecessary".
Now my part:
In the last days before Christ returns there will be a falling away from God, and many will be led astray by their own thinking and satans work. They are given over to a reprobate mind. Read about it in ROMANS 1: 28:29, 30,31, 32

God was created in a time when people needed explanations for the world around them. How did we get here, where are we, what are we, where are we going .... ? Science hadn't yet reached a stage where it could give us answers, and so God came into being.

The uproars with religion throughout history were primarily because science, once it reached that stage where it 'could' offer reasonable and scientific explanations, disagreed with the stories that the religions had been spreading. For instance, christianity's claim that the earth was the center of the universe and the sun revolved around us.

And now, little by little, you see religion being phased out more and more. The population of freethinkers grows day by day as people realize that science is now accurate enough to negate religion and god as unnecessary.

Edit: Just for fun, look at some of the answers you're getting on this ... you have one guy down below that says you should keep it to yourself or get a shot in the face ... meaning what, that only christians are allowed to publicy speak? Freedom of religion means freedom FROM religion as well. Remember that.

Then you have another telling you to go get a hobby. Is this all examples of their idea of "religious tolerance"?

I'm sorry, I just had to point that out .. I find it absolutely hilarious to hear some christians complain about being persecuted, but they're the first to jump in here and scream and yell, lol.
*sits back to count the number of 'tolerant' posts*

Oh oh oh .... I saw the pinacle of religious ridiculousness. To that Theo down below ... the burden of proof is on the one claiming existence, not the one claiming indifference. I could tell you I have a little green alien sitting here beside me, and you'd have to believe it, because I said so, correct? Um nope. The burden is on the one claiming existence. So, turnaround for you, to reach logical conclusions ... PROVE he exists.

It's not about understanding. It's about feeling. Religion plays on people's emotions, taking advantage of human insecurities that most of us have. That's why it is so popular. It is also why religion promotes "faith". It's because they really have scant evidence of any of their claims. They have to resort to telling people to just believe. Of course, they back that up with a lot of emotional manipulation.

Playing on people's emotions is very effective. We've been emotional animals for far longer than rational ones. That's why even very smart people succumb to religious superstition.

Jesus said " it is the sick who need a healer, not those who are well"
Since the existece of Jesus and His miracles has already been proven beyond a doubt, and by other sources than just "the church" or "weak-minded people", your excuses are invalid and your arguments weak and illogical.

God is God and I ( you, too) am NOT. Don't mock Him.

Of course you can, if you are convincing enough. There are so many "new" religions being born every now and then. In India there is this Sai Baba character or that Hugging Saint woman.

And you if you are real good in your pitch, you stand the risk of being filthy rich too.

If there is no God, why do you spend so much time trying to prove there isn't one? Why not move on with you life and find a hobby? Believing in God is not going to hurt anyone. There are some religions that are evil, but if you chose not to believe, go study plants or go sailing, pick up the guitar.
