Radio Data System, or RDS, is a standard from the European Broadcasting Union for sending small amounts of digital information using conventional FM radio broadcasts. The RDS system standardises several types of information transmitted, including time and station identification. RDS has been standard in Europe since the early 1990s, but less so in North America.

Here's what a RDS radio can offer you...
1. Know the name of the radio station you're listening to
2. Get the latest traffic and travel - even if you're listening to a CD (incidentally, DAB doesn't offer this)
3. Retune to the strongest signal for the station you're listening to
4. If yours is marked 'RadioText', it'll also give you some extra information. Some stations add 'now playing' information, so you know what the song is you're listening to. Some stations don't bother.
5. RDS also offers lots of other exciting things that most UK broadcasters don't bother with (like news alerts, or variable programme types, or other things).
DAB's entirely different - but if FM works for you, and you don't want any extra radio stations, don't feel under any pressure to change.

RDS radio stand for Radio Data System. It is an out of date technology used on the FM waveband to allow, amonst other things, for car radio's to retune themselves when they go out of range of one transmitter.
Their main benefit is that they can retune to a station that is transmitting traffic infromation.
They are now an outdated bit of technology as one day FM will be turned off. The replacement is DAB

Radio Data System. It allows two things, small amounts of information to be broadcast with the FM signal -Station name and DJ details etc and it allows the car stereo to re-tune itself as you drive out of the coverage of one transmitter and into the coverage of another one. Old hat now; DAB is the new god.

RDS is a function that enables your radio to 'listen out' for News/weather/traffic announcements etc and switch to them, then revert to the original channel/cd/tape when they finish. It also allows you to search for progs by type (music/talk/news etc)
