I won't claim to know how many people die directly "from drunk drivers," but I recently discovered that the number one cause of death for people 10-24, is accidents. Now, I don't know how to define accidents, but let's just say that they don't include slipping on a banana. The next leading cause of death for this age group is homicide.

I've also seen "Every 15 minutes someone is killed or injured by a drunk driver" presented as fact with no back up statistics.

Canada researched it and put the results here: http://www.safety-council.org/info/traffic/impaired/stats.html

In any case, even 1 would be too many.

Its awful that people get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle and drive drunk, with booze ya lose, in my state it has double from last year, they should make a car that when you get in it it could detect the amount of alcohol you have, and then diable the ignition so it would not start, I really don't have the answer, sorry

In 2005, 16,000 of the 46,000 killed in auto accidents in the US were killed by drunk drivers. I don't have the stats on injuries.
