The fun thing about Christianity is that both are true. Free will renders humans in charge of their salvation while Christ is considered a vital necessity, a way for sinners to come into salvation (thus the battle with the devil, Revelations and a whole host of martyrs.)

The fun thing about Buddhism is that Salvation isn't really prioritized... nor are humans, for that matter.

The terrible thing about atheism (and I've had a go at it) is the reconciliation between the repulsion toward evil and the understanding that there is no such thing as 'evil.' There's a slight tendency to fall into doing what serves the individual rather than the group and no shared rituals and beliefs to hold folks together. The bonus is, of course, that humanity becomes the top dog and the need for and belief in a savior or, indeed, any higher presence is moot.

So are humans in charge of their salvation? Absolutely. If you want to be saved, you must actively try for salvation.

Do humans need a savior? Absolutely. The vast majority of us are followers either by nature or by training. We need, at the very least, a figurehead and, I think, an actual savior would (by definition) save us.

Is there any such thing as being saved? We can hope and, if we're lucky, believe in mankind's ability to save ourselves, our planet, our virtues and strengths, and believe in a higher power that wants to preserve those strengths and that beauty... preferably one who loves us with more grace than we love ourselves and each other and in one who has the power to save us for an eternity without growing bored or angry.

Humans need a SAVIOUR which is the correct spelling if you check out the older dictionaries, a savior is someone that saves you from drowning, for example, the SAVIOUR is Jesus Christ.
Read Acts 4:12, Romans 10:10-13,Hebrews 2:3 and many other verses thru out the Bible. The change in the spelling of saviour came from the newer Bible versions.

You are in charge insomuch as you have free will to chose the Savior or to not chose Him.

Let's see, can you make it to Heaven without Jesus? How many of the 10 commandments have you broken? Can you even name all of the 10 commandments?

That's why you need a Savior.

No. Not if they salivate too much. But if they masticate too much, then yes, they definitely need a savior.

Both really. They do need a saviour, and they are in charge of their salvation.

They need a saviour because they cannot save themselves. But the saviour won't save them against their will, they have to decide to let the saviour save them. So, salvation is a joint effort between humans and the Saviour.

Seeing the concept of salvation is a Judeo Christian belief I would have to say they need the savior part.

Man needs a savior to redeem himself to God. God requires a blood sacrafice for the atonement of our sins. Jesus came to die for us to be that redeemer. The plan of God's salvation is written in the New Testament of the bible. Get a copy and read.
Man is man.....all he can do is imagine...and make stuff. God is Spirit and in control of heaven and hell. You need Jesus as your Saviour. Read his word.

We do need Jesus he is our savior that's why he died we are saved by his grace only and can only get to heaven through him.
The only thing we are in charge of is the choice we make.
Jesus died to give us that choice. No you can not save yourself you can not even take your next breath without God allowing it to happen.
