I'm currently a permanent employee but was working as a casual worker during my studies. I was wondering if it's possible to claim my tax money back. I've heard that if you've worked while being a student you were able to as long as you'd left the country-by the way I'm a European citizen.

You can claim back income tax paid if your earnings are not going to exceed the personal allowance. You can't claim back NI (National Insurance) which is calculated weekly.

Tax and NI are two separate things.

You may be able to claim NI back - it depends on where you're from. For example, New Zealanders can claim it back. Australians cannot claim it back, but can opt to have it paid into a private pension scheme in Australia. So I would advise that you look into this properly. I would have thought as an EU citizen you probably wouldn't get it back, but it's worth checking.

You will be able to claim back tax if you have been overtaxed. If you earned below the tax-free threshold, which is approximately £4,500 per year, then you will get it all back. It's possible that even if you earned more than this you may be entitled to some kind of refund.

A good starting point could be 1st Contact (www.1stcontact.co.uk) - they predominantly deal with Antipodeans and Polish people, but may know of the rules for your country, or may be able to advise who could help you. But if you decide to claim your tax back through them, they will take a percentage of your return as their commission.

You are confusing tax and NI. You cannot get NI back as that is what pays for healthcare etc. Your tax is a different matter. Did you get a P45 when you left your job; if so write to the tax office who dealt with the company you were working for and ask them ; don't include the P45 , they should send you any relevant forms to fill in.

You can claim NI back in certain circumstances - for example if you had two jobs and had full NI deducted for both.

NI can not be claimed back regardless of how much you earn, what your status is, or how old you are, everyone gets NI taken off them.

If you earned less than about £5,000 in any tax year, you can claim back your tax and NI contributions. Contact the tax office who deals with your present employer and they will tell you how to reclaim it.

Absolutely not. The national insurance you pay covers you not just for the future but for now. So while you were paying it, you were covered for health treatment etc
