Many of the more rabid evangelical sects suffer from this - under a veil of humility and subjection to god's will, they are getting off on the smug thought that they are the elect, the chosen few, the ones who have got it right. Think what arrogance, for example, is required to declare that every scientist, every geologist, astronomer and historian in the world is wrong, and some home skooled trailer-trash pastor is right; the world is 6000 years old and the grand canyon was made by the flood!

It is vain to think your right without proof. However, if it can be proven and it is believed , then the claim can be profitable to those who believe as well. Let the Word of God be true but every man a liar. The New Testament church began in Jerusalem in the book of Acts. Within the first 2 chapters the church is established. We could theoretically close the book to go on further. If you have not experienced being born again as did these people in the first 2 chapters...then you are not in the church and you need what they got. Read and pray.

I like this question! nicely put!
i have often wondered how some religious people can immediately say that their religion, and their god, is the only true path to ... i don't know, righteousness? heaven? whatever it is they believe we all need.
I mean, christians and catholics believe in the same god, but both religions think that they know best. most religions believe in one god, (except sikhism, i think that might be the only one, (barring religions like wicca ect. which are not 'organised' religions, as such.)) so why cant everyone simply admit that they believe in the same god? why does there always have to be a 'chosen few' who know the true path, who believe that if you dont worship your deity of choice like they do, you are an infidel and will spend eternity burning in hell (or the punishment of the religion's choice)?
it is vain and prideful to think that you are superior to everyone else for no particular reason. does that mean everyone's going to hell now?

I often feel that way; I sort of believe...but I can also see that once people start organising religions they start to spin the message to suit themselves. That's why religion has not only the power to do good but can also start wars etc etc etc.
If there is a God (& I'm fairly sure there is...) I think He must look at the world & wonder why his creation just doesn't get it !

It is not wrong to think that one's religion is right, but exclusively right. Usually, pride exists in all criticism which aims at pointing out the falsity of other people.

Of course not. Jesus claimed Himself that He was the only way to the Father (John 14:6), and that no one can enter the kingdom of heaven unless they are born again. Each person has the choice whether to believe Him.......or not.

I like this question------------makes alot of sense.
That is why I like my Jewish faith. We do not try to convert others, we do not say we are the only true religion, and we believe that the good of the earth (no matter what their religion) go to G-d, after death.
