Their primary job is to ensure all issues concerning the soldiers are taken care of (ensuring they are getting food, water, mail, are performing proper PCC/PCI's, enforcing safety, etc.). They are also the primary advisor to the BN Commander. They may go out on patrols and such, but not as a warfighter, but as an observer to make sure that everything is being done to standard. Don't get me wrong, if a situation develops, they are still soldiers, and have 20+ years of skills and knowledge to increase the lethality of any element they are with.

They stay on the FOB (Forward Operating Base) and correct Soldier's uniforms, enforce policies, and chew people out.

On my FOB alone, there are probably 7 CSM's with nothing better to do than rip people's butts out for silly nonsense.
