It is not the job of a CSM or SGM to do the fighting. Their primary job is to ensure all issues concerning the soldiers are taken care of (ensuring they are getting food, water, mail, are performing proper PCC/PCI's, enforcing safety, etc.). They are also the primary advisor to the BN Commander. They may go out on patrols and such, but not as a warfighter, but as an observer to make sure that everything is being done to standard. Don't get me wrong, if a situation develops, they are still soldiers, and have 20+ years of skills and knowledge to increase the lethality of any element they are with.

It depends on thier MOS (Military Occupation Specialty)
There are a multitude of taskings that need to be performed in a war. It is not merely a point and shoot affair. To keep this answer simple I will submit to you that any Officer out ranks a Sergeant Major and Officers lead troops into battle, usually relying on the expertise and experience of Senior Enlisted troops such as Sergeant Majors.

Gerinomo has got the answer. A CSM focuses on 'soldier care' issues and ensures that people are doing things the way they are supposed to be done.
BTW - if a sergeant-major has to make a uniform correction on a soldier then there is something wrong with that soldier's squad leader.
Here is a link to the story of a CSM I knew. He mentored me even though I was not even part of his brigade. I have known many CSM's and he was typical for about 80% of them.

LOL!!
Let me tell you what CSM's do....
They stay on the FOB (Forward Operating Base) and correct Soldier's uniforms, enforce policies, and chew people out.
On my FOB alone, there are probably 7 CSM's with nothing better to do than rip people's butts out for silly nonsense.
Don't even get me started on the Combat Patch issue....
