Most of the people that prayed to idols also included God in there as just one more god to worship. They did not put Him as the sole God. God gave us the 10 commandments to protect us, not to stop us from doing things.

I have read the Bible cover to cover many times and I've never read where God told anyone to pray to dead objects. In fact, praying to anyone other than God is stated in the Bible as idol worship. That includes praying to statues, crucifixes, and "saints'.

They got tired of waiting for Moses to bring them the Law from God when he was on Sinai; they reverted back to the ways they had learned as slaves in Egypt- thus the golden calf, etc.

they believed that there was power (or god) in all objects
they would also pray to their dead ancestors for guidance
the idea of 1 god had not really taken hold yet

I really doubt they were "worshiping" the idols and bodies, but were using them as representatives of their god.
