There is a lot of research showing that weed/THC is much harder on your lungs than nicotine. THC is stickier, and it is less pure than cigarettes, people can inhale bacteria when they smoke weed. It sounds like your dad might have chronic obstructive lung disease, which definitely can be caused by smoking. Smoking weed is worse. (He also could have asthma, or have been exposed to something bad in the air for a long time, maybe where he works, where he used to live, etc.)

The definitive work on the subject was done by Dr. Donald Tashkin of UCLA. He found that marijuana smokers actually had slightly lower rates of lung cancer than average. In other words, it may have a slightly protective effect. There is a good basis for this idea, because the active ingredient in marijuana has been shown to shrink and kill cancer tumors.

WebMD: "Marijuana, unlike tobacco and alcohol, does not appear to cause head, neck, or lung cancer, says a researcher from Johns Hopkins Medical School"
TheSite.Org: "Dr Marinel Ammenheuser and her colleagues at the University of Texas Medical Branch studied a group of pregnant women who only smoked cannabis. They claim to have discovered evidence that cannabis smoking causes the same kind of damage to DNA as tobacco... Similarly Dr Michael Roth discovered preliminary evidence that THC, the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, may promote a carcinogenic effect.
This would seem to be in direct contradiction to the findings of Dr Louis Harris from the Medical College of Virginia though, who discovered that [THC is an] active anti-cancer agent. "
DrugPolicy.Org: "[M]arijuana users typically smoke much less often than tobacco smokers, and over time, inhale much less smoke. As a result, the risk of serious lung damage should be lower in marijuana smokers. There have been no reports of lung cancer related solely to marijuana, and in a large study presented to the American Thoracic Society in 2006, even heavy users of smoked marijuana were found not to have any increased risk of lung cancer."

never PROVEN in a study to my knowledge, there was a very biased study done in the late 60's or early 70's, where some scientists pumped the smoke from one ounce of marijuana into a 2X2X3 box containing a chimpanzee, while removing all oxygen, the poor little guy sufferred immense brain damage, which was far more likely from oxygen deprivation than the effects of the pot.
God made marijuana, man made whiskey, who do you trust more?
