You must be a lawful permanent resident. The military now checks directly with the US immigration services to ensure that the documents are not faked.

And BTW - any kind of a felony record will effectively bar you from military service.

While I was in the Navy (1996-2005), I met both men and women from a number of different countries like the Philippines, Hong Kong, Lebanon, Kenya, and some of the others slip my mind now.

All of them had taken the ASVAB in their own countries and entered the US military, and they were entered (at their own request) into a special program for gaining citizenship. (I sat through the citizenship ceremony of one of my friends from Manila). I shook his hand and told him, "Now that you're a citizen, the Tax Man Cometh! Congratulations!"

The guy from Lebanon spoke Arabic and acted as our translator whenever we went on tours in the Emirates. I noticed that when he wasn't there we didn't eat quite as good!

The guy from Hong Kong was always writing letters to his family in Chinese.

One of the guys from Kenya was always getting pissed at me for asking too many questions. I could never figure that out.

I don't know if the US still allows foriegnors to test in or not. I know that the Philippines stopped several years ago, and when they were, I believe thier minimum score on the ASVAB for entry was a 70, which is fairly high. That means that all the foreignors who served here were pretty darn smart, but usually didn't get security clearances.

No, a non-citizen must have a green card in order to enlist, and cannot become a commissioned.officer. An illegal alien, by definition, has already broken the laws of our country and the U.S. military will not accept such a person.
