I'm an Atheist, my girlfriend is Christian. I went to great lengths to understand her faith, her beliefs. She did the same to understand my beliefs.

Here on Y!A I am literally shocked when I see the horribly low knowledge about Atheism amongst Christians. Mind you, not all Christians, but a large part of the Christians that use this forum. Is it really that big a problem to open Wikipedia and search for the word Atheism ?

People have weird ways of thinking. They think with their emotions and ignore the actual meaning of a word that causes them to have an emotional reaction.

Sad, really. People should be seen as individuals.

You'd be surprised to know that there are some Christians out there who can woop your butt with all types of beliefs. Yeah I do believe that there are many Christians who just sit on their beliefs and don't even care to learn others. In the bible the apostle Paul knew A LOT about gnosticism and Roman beliefs. He went to knowledge centers of the time and debated with them. I know a lot about evolution, I even had a class in it, I read about it when I was little and my parents let me be exposed to many beliefs. I even am studying Christian belief and I have found it satisfactory to become my personal beliefs. This doesn't impair me to learn new ones. I believe especially if you have the ability to do academic endeavours. Learn the differences, explore other people's beliefs. I am intrigued and stimulated by knowledge and to all the intolerance posted on this forum. Please...STOP generalizing! We ALL have to realize we are now living in a pretty pluralistic world. There are many variants of someone who ascribes to Christianity, Atheism, Mysticism etc. SO STOP the ignorant generalized statements!

You would think it is the way people think about atheists here.

Atheism actually means very, very little. All it means is that you don't believe in god.

Says not a thing any other kind of belief, any race, any culture, either gender, any attitude or outlook, or morality.

Some atheists are skeptics. Some are dreamers and romantics. Some are smart. Some are dumb. Some are young, some are old. Some like green eggs and ham. Some don't like them in a box, they don't like them with a fox.

People should maybe realize that to assume really does make an *** of u and me.

The thing is, and I can only speak for myself and a few other people I know, many Atheists have a Christian background or upbringing so it's not like they/we don't know what we are talking about when referring to Christianity. Christians assume that an Atheist is anti-God when we are actually just totally indifferent, we simply do not believe he exists. They just can't comprehend that and many believe that it is an act of treason of some kind. I hold no ill-will towards the average Christian, but I resent their proselythising and the superiority, elitist complex of some.

Well I am shocked at how many atheists have such a shallow understanding of the diversity of Christian beliefs and history. The ones who seem to make the most noise on YA seem to make broad statements about the Christian belief system. See my experience with Atheisism and Agnostism is that everyone has there own belief structure just like Christians and Buddists and everyone else. Most of the Atheists I know personally are very respectfully of my belief and everyone elses. Sure we debate but as friends.

Also to study Athiesm as a belief system is a little more difficult then Christianity, certainly there is a history of Atheism but it has rarely been quite so fundimentally organized as any of the major religions.

No. The bible belt in america has let education suffer heavily in order to lead a 'godly' life. They do not teach altrnative theory, kids are left with no inkling people might have different theories (like darwinism). People are left with no idea that some people don't worship christianity, that some belong to other religions, that some people don't support everything they support.

They are ill-equipped in life to talk to people from different areas who won't fit in with their mould and they respond to other beliefs with violence and threats and cries of 'sin'.

Nothing on this site shocks me anymore. The majority of people who answer any religious related questions seem to speak from their prejudices w/o backing it up with any sense of reality. God forbid someone should read up on a subject before they spew forth hatred & disrespect for something they know nothing about.

It's not really surprising when you realize that the people in R&S are generally around 12 years of age. There are those that are older, but few.

Yea. Once I was talking to my co-worker and she said if you don't believe in God you may as well be a lying cheating thieve. Shows how they really see humanity. It means some of them are sooo low that without the faith don't see much point in life but to steal and cheat.

I can only feel sorry for them... and us as we have to live amongst them.
