Amen to that. The backlash from what I call the hand-holding epidemic of the 90's self-help movement is really starting to manifest now. Not just regarding weight, but with many things involving personal responsibility. Just look at some of the ridiculous lawsuits that get filed. It's always someone elses fault, right? We're force fed that all the time. Blame someone else. Don't be so hard on yourself, etc, etc. So, now we have McDonalds gettings sued for people's obesity. Airlines getting sued for discrimination because someone couldn't squeeze their *** into the seat and no one wants their problems to be a result of their own doing. I am also tired of it.
BTW- I am a healthy weight right now, but I certainly have been overweight at different times in my adult life and it was always a direct result of eating way too much junk and being too busy or too tired (or whatever other excuse I happened to use on a given day) to exercise.

Good for you for taking responsibility and acknowledging your actions. The problem with todays society is children are being brought up without outdoor activities. They are being kept home playing games on the computer and watching television all the time (or whatever). Parents are not taking the time with children. But there has been facts that our genes can also determine if obesity is in the horizon. This is unfortunate, but can be conquered.
I admire your awareness. If you have children or when you do have children, remember to get them involved in something. My daughter and son: never in the house. We entered my daughter into gymnastics and my son into football, soccer and baseball just to keep them active.
And do not place blame on the fat lazy people. Remember, if you are brought up this way, you will probably live this way. Our parents have a big part in our lives mentally, emotionally and physically. Nervous eating is also a factor.
We can also turn this around towards anorexia, binging and purging. This is not good either. In fact, I believe it is worse than being overweight.
Each person has their own self-esteem issues (females more than males) which leads to one exteme or another. Why? I do believe it has a lot to do with the media, peer pressure, and the way we were raised.
I also have to agree with you about the drug issue. This is not good at all. I'm sure if there were answers to every statement you made, we all would be much better off.

Easier to do something than to assign blame. Take a course in cooking. Buy foods that need to be cooked, so it takes longer to get that calorie fix. Walk or ride a bicycle to the store. Think of all the money and gas that saves. Plus it makes you feel really really good.
The pre-made foods and convenience foods and meals are more to blame, they are easily available right? The fast food joints encourage you to drive a car to them, if you ride a bicycle to the pick up window at mcdonalds they will have you arrested, for trespassing, and say that it is for safety reasons. Of course you could ride a motorcycle up to the same window, with absolutely no more safety or protection than riding a bicycle, and they cheerfully serve you.
A little pro-active way to entertain yourself, talk back to the Teevee.
When they pull some idiot stunt on you like the dope commercials, laugh your **** off at them.
Fight back, take control. You'll feel really good and the exercise does you even better. Get onto an upward spiral, the food you cook will taste better to you anyway, because you make it to your own tastes. Can McDonalds match that? No they can not. You will have more money, because you won't be buying gas and maintenance and insurance if you ride a bicycle.
It takes more time, sure! Time you don't have to try to fill up by watching drivel on the TeeVee.
Why have a teevee that can get a thousand channels or even a hundred if all they have on is the same stuff, and reruns of it at that.
Try to find some kind of walking job, or strenuous, for a second job or even a replacement primary job. The paycheck is great motivation for doing the exercise. And you won't have time to worry about losing weight, that part takes care of itself.
email me if you get feeling too bad, I just had surgery on my foot a month ago, won't be able to walk for another month or so. So I have plenty of time, as you can see by the length of this answer.
Have lots of fun, we all need it.

THere are indeed some people who, because of genetics gain ft easily and/or find it difficult to lose. But they are quite rare. THer is also the problem that if you have allowed your weight to rise, and to stay high for long enough, your body adjusts to consider your new weight as normal, and tries to maintain it. So even people with normal metabolism can find it hard to establish a healthier lower weight and maintain it until it becomes the new norm.
So those of us that have always been slim should not be too harsh in our judgement of overweight and obese people. It is true that for most of them they could, with sufficient willpower, lose the excess. But it probably takes more willpower than we think.

Eh, people (in general) don't like to take responsibility because they feel that if they do and they fail they can't avoid facing the fact that they did in fact fail.
If one blames it on genetics and the like, s/he can avoid facing the failure since s/he frames it under "huge effort against nature".
And yet it's even more liberating when one overcome genetics via a huge effort... it feels empowering! But they don't know and that's why they keep on behaving like victims, me thinks.

sometimes, it is genetics that causes them to be fat. some people are unable to feel full.
but too many people use this excuse for their eating habits and lack of exercise. this is also why diets don't tend to work. people want instant results, and if they don't see them they give up and ask doctors to give them a pill to make them skinny.

There are two types of people: those who live to eat(which would include you) and those who eat to live, you have to get used to eating to live, stop splurging on loads of food. eat less and get used to it. American restaurants are feeding us more and more and we don't complain about that. we get angry if there's less food. isn't america the only place where a buffet is commonplace?
