I have natually dark brown hair. I dyed it black on October 15th. It isn't black anymore...just kinda well, lighter than black. I tried to color it Medium Golden Brown. It didn't work at all. I barely notice a difference. It's like the haircoloring stuff isn't taking. How much does it cost to my hair colored at SmartStyle in Wal*Mart??

What luvblis (sorry if I spelt it wrong) says is true about the chemicals.
But if you still want to go ahead and colour, dark hair needs to have a colour filler to help the new colour to adhere to the hair follicle, as I don't live in USA I can't give you a colouring price it is best you ring them and tell them what you want done including how long your hair is so they can give you an idea of how much.

lol. you can't go from light black to medium brown! Ok, first dye it dark brown. Then give it rest for at least 3 months. Then you can dye it medium brown. It probably won't come out the color you want, but if you dye it like...5 months later, you'll most likely get the shade you want. But do so with great caution, it will defiantly do some damage to your hair.

you better give your hair and liver a rest, just let it grow out.
you may have to do a good liver detox too, as all that chemical can cause health problems
