On this date (2 May) 55 years ago the first passenger jet aircraft flew, operating from London's Heathrow Airport to Johannesburg, South Africa.
The de Havilland Comet took off from Heathrow Airport on 2 May 1952 flying at twice the height and speed of previous aircraft, however it had to make five refuelling stops before reaching its destination.
The jet-powered British-built aircraft, which was able to fly above storms, reportedly reached speeds of up to 500mph and took only 23 hours, taking 17 hours off the previous flight time.

The Dehavilland Comet, built here in Sunny Hatfield Uk. It was taken out of service due to saftey problems, but the airframe used stayed in service with the RAF ( under the name of Nimrod ) for many years.
The place it was built is now a hotel, a fried chicken drivethrough, a load of abandoned buildings, a housing estate and the site of the University of Hertfordshire. Luckily the main hanger and airfield controll tower had a preservation orders on them, and is now Europes largest health club (next generation).

De Comet. It was pretty cool at first until it began crashing for no apparent reason. It was finally discovered the crashes were due to rapid depressurization. By the time this discovery was made, the Comet lost all credibility.

Strictly speaking, it was a Vickers Viking 1B that was retrofitted with Rolls-Royce Nene engines and first flew in April, 1948.

Of course the DH.106 Comet was the first airliner designed from the ground up as a pure-turbine powered airliner and first flew in July, 1949.
