I try to keep a little something in my bag like a granola bar or something to give to people when they ask me for money. Money is just going to go to their drug or alcohol problem, which is what usually puts people on the streets.

If I do offer food to someone and they don't take it, or they just grab it and scowl at me, I don't take it personally. I just keep walking. They're not used to being treated as human anymore. People walk right by them without making eye contact, and if they're on the train begging people stare right through them. Enough months of that and you probably wouldn't be very nice when someone finally talked to you, either.

I love to take time and listen to a street busker and will happily give to them if they are any good. Walking down the High Street in Lincoln and being greeted by a melody always adds something to the day. I also buy the Big Issue whenever I am in the UK. I don't usually give to street beggars, although when I pick up a vibe of some sort, I will dip into my purse. The exception is a guy here where I live who has cerebral palsy and a smile to light up even the darkest day. I would never walk past him without giving something. A beggar having a dog certainly wouldn't move me to give. And yes a lot of them are con artists. I know of one who had enough money to stashed to buy her daughter a new car with cash for a wedding present. But is she wants to sit in the 100F heat all day to beg good luck to her.It is a job of sorts and it makes those who give feel better about themselves. A bit like chocolate really!!

Well I do not know were you live. But l live in Nashville, TN. There is a minister that helps homeless people. He wrote an article and filled the public in on pan-handling. First of all we have many places for the homeless to eat. I can tell most of the homeless in Nashville are not skinny by any means. Also we have what you call Union Misson that helps the homeless. They get food, a shower, clean cloths. He advised the public not to give money to these people because they want it to buy alcohol and drugs. I had a friend she was at KFC and this man approached her and gave her this sob story that he was hungry and if she could give him some money to get food. She said, well order what you want on the menu and I will pay for it. He had the gall to say, I do not like KFC,could you just give me some money to go somewhere else. If he was really that hungry he would eat a hafe eaten hamburger. So to answer your question, no do not give to pan handlers. I would just donate money to associations that help people in need.

Walk away, simple. If he/she doesn't want to accept your money, that's his/her problem. Don't even waste time feeling bad about it. With all the people that simply pass by people in need, you should be congradulated for being a decent human being and giving anything in the first place.

Ignore him...well FORGIVE him. He is a beggar and I'm sure he's had a hard life. Tolerate his ungrateful action.

Leave it, it's not your problem.
You can never fix up their circumstance with more money.
Broke is temporary but poor is permanent.

Screw him, he's just hoping for more. I guarantee you that he picked it up. He's just hoping to guilt ya into that dollar and hoping that someone else sees it as well and they toss a dollar for pity's sake.
