Any physical activity that gets your heart rate and respiration up will burn calories and fat. My best advice to you is to buy a jogger trampoline and find a good trampoline workout video to follow along to. That way you're not just doing the same movements over and over, so you won't get bored, plus the spring of the tramp will take the impact off your joints.

If its cold outside get proper running wear for the outdoors such as some nice longsleeved base layers and goretex tights and you'll be snug as a bug.
Go to a specialist running shop for an analysis of your gait cycle (the way you run, the biomechanics of your feet, whether you pronate etc) and get some proper running shoes. Do not go out running in bog standart cross trainers or you'll potentially ruin your knees over longer mileage.
What do you mean with "running on the spot"?? Do you mean treadmill?? Running outdoors burns more calories and makes you stronger as you need both forward and upward propulsion. I hope you didn't mean literally running on the spot because what would be the point of that??
DON'T buy any of the stupid cheap gadgets that are in the shops at the moment. They'll be dusting under your bed before you know it. Get out there. Running outdors is the best thing in terms of cardiovascular exercise. If you don't feel very fit start with a run-walk programme of a minute on a minute off, increase your run time and decrease your walk time until you can do 5 minutes without stopping. then increase your time and gradually improve your endurance bit by bit until you can do about 3 miles... etc.

Jogging on the spot is an effective exercise and will probably burn up as many calories as jogging along the road.

No, it is not the same. Jogging faster is obviously more strenuous than jogging slower, because it takes effort to move yourself forward. That said, pumping your legs a little faster could probably compensate.

You miss out on the fresh air and fun of being outdoors.
But from a raw exercise point of view, yes you are getting a workout. Definitely it is better than doing nothing.
Have you considered investing in a treadmill? It is not that expensive. You can workout indoors and there is a variety.

I too would endorse the mini trampoline solution - I've been using one since my local gym was demolished and it's kept my body toned and weight down. Get yourself some lively music and you'll find it's a fun and effective way to exercise.

Wear some extra clothes e.g gloves, hat........etc. And then once you have been running for a bit you will get warm. and then just take the extra clothing off. Also i have one of them calorie counters and jogging 2 miles burns roughly 141 calories.

It's probably not quite as good as outdoor but I think you would find it more tiring. It's hard to run on the spot for an hour,so have you thought of getting a treadmill?

No! And jogging for around an hour would probably burn off nearer 600-800 calories and even more if you were jogging in the cold. Jogging on the spot would probably burn off around 150-300 calories in an hour (maybe more). Thing is, you'd get so bored, you'd probably give up after 10 minutes. It sounds more like interrogation torture than a serious, enjoyable exercise.
If you are too lazy to run in the "cold" (this is the mildest Winter on record, you quitter!!), then perhaps you should re-evaluate why you want to lose weight. If you are already making such weak, lame excuses to not exercise, i would already give up!!
On a more serious note, either leave your house and jog, join a gym and go at least three times a week for an hour a session OR buy an aerobics stepper for your home (they are cheap) and do that for an hour every other day.
However, i can assure you that the latter idea will probably last a week before you get bored and it never comes out from underneath your bed again.
Personally, i would join a gym - once i start going, i keep going otherwise i feel guilty (due to waste of membership money) and ashamed (peers are regularly going) if i DONT go. I have had exercise equipment at home before, but barely used it since it gets very boring (its solitary) so you end up finding it practically impossible to motivate yourself to exercise.
Otherwise, find a friend who might want to join you jogging in the evenings - its safer, much more enjoyable, and it will keep you motivated to go so that you dont let your jog partner down.
