dealing with bipolar outbreaks are different to resolve then children without it. Seek help from a therapist who treats bipolar in children. If you try treating the outbreak in a usual manor, it could cause a manic outbreak with the child. Meaning you could cause or make the situation worse and need help to control it.

My son is ADD combined with ADHD. I tried all the natural stuff first, but still it didn't control it enough. His behavior controlled the house. I got him on Strattera. This was a great improvement. The outburst thing is much better now, but he still has them. I do a lot of redirecting- change the subject, start him in a different direction. Also, keep cool, the angrier you get the worst the outburst

My son (who is now 26) has ADHD; he takes medication for it, and very likely always will. When he was young, one of the best things I could do for him was to simply hug him and hold him firmly (but not "trap" him) until he calmed down. Discipline is like any other child; physical discipline just doesn't work - witholding privileges is much better.
With his medication, he is a very successful, happy, intelligent and calm person; he's now a mechanical engineer, and the medication made that possible, so DON'T let anybody tell you that it causes problems - it relieves far more problems than it causes.

My 13 yr. old son has bipolar. I went as long as I could without medication. I don't like giving meds. to my children unless necessary. He takes Abilify, a mood stabilizer. He takes the lowest dose because it works for him. Things aren't perfect, but so much better.

my sister has severe ADD, and i know that my parents went through hell trying to calm it down. They took her to a therapist and it definately seemed to help, they also put her on medication (not adderol, something else i can't remember). She has a hard time in school (she's not dumb) but can't concentrate, oh i should mention she also has slight OCD so that added to the chaos. it takes time an much patience.

We didn't have any kids with adhd and bipolar, but my husband has both. The Dr's found the right "drug cocktail" to work for him.. it took several different medications and combinations to find the ones that work for him now.. I thought my husband was a just a jerk, he wasn't a jerk, just mentally ill... huh..who would have thought? We have been happily married now for 28 yrs.. but I thank God that we didn't have kids...mental illness is hereditary.
