Haven't smoked since Wednesday, but all I can think about is how much I want a cigarette and I swear I feel like I'm gonna jump out of my skin ! Now I know what a crack addict feels like.

yeah, just randomly giving it up and keeping your mind busy with other things is the only way i've known it to work. the more you think about quitting smpking, the more you think about smoking, and the more you want to be smoking.

keep your hands busy, keep your mind busy. the first week is the worst.

I smoked for 40 years. I was diagnosed with MILD emphysema. It scared the crap out of me. For the first 3 months I only pulled the cigarette smoke into my mouth...I did not inhale. I also began chewing very strong gums and brushing my teeth constantly. This was a kind of self hypnosis; telling myself how great my mouth and breath smelled on the gum and toothpaste and really ragging on my nicotine and tar mouth...it was ugly. The point is I smoked less because it was an unpleasant way of getting in the nicotine. On the other hand, I focused on the realization that all this junk in my mouth had been going in my lungs for 40 years. Finally, after about 3 months, I had tapered off enough to give it up completely. I always gave myself the option of taking in another cigarette, BUT NEVER INTO MY LUNGS AGAIN. I can have the nicotine be absorbed into my mucus membranes in my mouth, BUT NEVER TO MY LUNGS AGAIN. It worked for me. It's been 3 years since I have put a cigarette to my mouth.

I just quit Wednesday too! I thought I was going crazy so I went to the docs and he gave me a very low dose of a sedative so that i wouldn't kill anyone(I have kids). Now I don't even need it I just drink some orange juice and the feeling goes away. The sugar in the juice raises your blood sugar just like having a ciggarette does and the anxious feeling goes away. Plus something in the orange juice(vitamin C) replaces what the cigs have depleted in your body and will make you feel much better. Good luck!

I'm feeling you. It's been the fourth day, and I am still not experiencing any relief. I'm so edgy-one minute I think I'm doing ok, then the next...You know, they say it's a habit, that's it's an addiction, but you know what else? It's a reward system. Something to look forward to. After a meal, a stressful situation, with a drink...the list goes on. It is like a best friend. And I miss my best friend, dammit!

My husband and I both quit in early November 2006, right after his heart attack (he is 38, fit and a vegetarian but smoking got him). I quit to support his recovery. Sometimes I feel like a crack addict too, so I had to laugh when I read that because I can sure relate!! One thing I found in the first 6 weeks was that the nicotine patch helped me immensely, I wonder if you are on it too?
I wish I had a magic spell to take the cravings away for us both - just know that you are bettering your health........I dunno, this is so very hard I wish I knew what else to say but good luck to you, we can beat this!!!

yes you are in the withdrawal phase from the nicotiene. what works for me is when the urge really hits i suck on a wintergreen
lifesaver and take slow deep breaths the urge will subside. depending on each individual it ussually take 3-5 days for the nicotene to get out of your system then you have the psychological effects. hang in there its hard but you can do it!!

Just keep thinking the worst withdrawal symptoms usually peak in three or four days then get better so hang in there.

Just grin and bear it. I quit cold turkey because I really wanted to stop. And I had support from my friends. Even the smokers. They smoked away from me.

Find a support group -- it's supposed to help a lot.
