The responsibility of the Church leaders is an awesome one. They are to teach the entire Word of God to those who are believers and they are to train their flock and participate in the sharing of the Gospel of Jesus Christ with those who do not believe. Since they are in a position of spiritual authority and more knowledgeable about the Bible -or should be- they will be held to a higher level of accountability. Jesus asked Peter, do you love Me. Peter answered, Lord, you know that I love you. Jesus replied, feed My sheep.

That is outlined in Ephesians 4 in the Bible. Eph 4: 11 "And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ."

Primary purpose is to build up christians to become spiritually mature in Christ.

That is the purpose as stated in the Bible. Today the contemporary church has added all kinds of things that never were part of the original church. I realize this is not what you are asking, but I put it in for comparison purposes.
