They recently increased the allowable age to enlist but sorry it wasn't to 55. A friend enlisted at 34, I believe he was just in the margin.

the only thing you can join is the reserves but only if you have active time already i think the age is 44 (so if you spent 11 years active you can). just subtract your active duty years from your age and that is your army age so to speak

the cutoff age is 42 if you have prior military experience
36 is the oldest that you can be drafted at, if a draft was in effect!

At 55 you should be educated enough by LIFE if not by academia to not WANT to.
But heck - if they'll let you - go ahead. They certainaly wouldn't send their own children - they might as well send their brothers.
