as bad as this might sound, i occasionally make myself throw up from time to time.. but i usually just do it when i feel like ive had a big meal or that ive eaten more than i should have. i do it quite often but.. im not sure if i would call this an eating disorder because i can control how much i do it. and i just dont feel like it is an eating disorder or anything because its not like i lose any weight from it at all.
sorry, this might seem like a really stupid question and should seem obvious to me but it isnt. i just need some advice.

Hi. I'm no expert, but I would call this an eating disorder. It's seems like you are very aware of the things you do. You're not in denial, just not sure (which is good). The fact that you can stop if you wanted to doesn't really mean much, except that maybe you should stop before it gets out of hand. And, no, it's not a stupid question at all. I've never thought about a situation like yours...Good luck!

If you are vomiting as a means of weight control more than three times a week, you probably have bulimia.

Bulimics aren't like anorexics in that they don't look terribly skinny, so you prob don't feel like you have an ED because you're not emaciated.

HOWEVER. This is pretty serious. This is exactly how I got started on a road to eating disorders. I alwys thought I could stop whenever I wanted but you just can't. It is no different than any other addiction and it will kill you. I am only 27 and have already had a stroke,a heart attack, ruined teeth, ulcers, heartburn that I will have for the rest of my life, and a ton of other things. You should get help soon. It's not IF you die from this, it's WHEN.

I know you don't want to hear it, but yes...it's an eating disorder. Bulimia is associated at times with control, as well as other factors. Sometimes, people think that their life is so out of control they take the one thing they can control (eating) and run with it.

So, if you are saying you do this because you think you may have eaten too much...why not just CONTROL how much you are eating?! You have a problem and should either knock it off or really seek some professional help. Once you realize you do have a problem and identify it you hopefully will be on your way to getting over this.

hi there, i know you don't want to hear bad news etc but to be honest - you're walking a very dangerous line between a bad eating 'habit' and developing an eating disorder called bulimia(which i'm sure you've heard of)..you may feel that you are in control of it now but i can assure you that it will slowly escalate to a point where you start feeling the need to do it after every meal because your stomach will start shrinking and any meal will then feel too much to handle. with bringing up all the food you are not allowing your body to absorb anything so effectively you are starving it when you throw up. other side effects of throwing up are rotting teeth from all the stomach acids coming through your mouth as well as longer term effects such as difficutty having children etc. it really could turn into a nasty situation so my advice to you is to rather try and keep your portions smaller so you don't feel the need to throw up and if you can't dp that then really really try and avoid keeping the habit - it will develop into something that you may not be strong enough to control. please take care and listen to your body, if you are young now and doing damage , you could find all sorts of ailments when you get older. be careful! good luck..

Hello,

you said you make yourself throw up "from time to time" but then you also say that you do it "quite often". You also ask "would this be considered having an eating disorder" but then you say you don't feel it's like an eating disorder.

To me, it all says that you want to hear that it's ok to intentionally throw up.

Well, it's NOT. Of course it doesn't mean you are bad or evil, but it does mean that this behavior you have is not ok. Even if you don't qualify for the full blown bulimia according to DSM-IV, the behavior is still risky (read link below). If I were you I would go to a professional.

yea, it is. an eating disorder doesn't always mean losing weight. binge eating is an eating disorder where you gain a lot of weight. anything with unhealthy eating habits (like not eating and throwing up) is considered an eating disorder.

and it's not a stupid question at all. eating disorders are quite complicated. in your case, physically you have an eating disorder, but mentally you don't. and the mental part of an eating disorder is usually more important.

so to prevent damaging your body more (as well as your teeth, since stomach acid erodes your enamel), take little steps in helping yourself stop.

i know how you feel. that horrible stretching feeling when you eat too much and you wish you could just get rid of the food in your stomach. i would suggest eating smaller amounts more often, or when you do eat too much, don't sit down. walk. walk. walk. not only does it burn calories and helps you digest your food easier, your pants aren't scrunched up against your stomach, so you feel more comfortable.

i hope this helps.

I think this condition is called bulemia. It is usually done by young girls for fear of being fat and ugly.
I am not a doctor so I cannot say for sure but I think that you are too engrossed about your body and do not generally care about anything else.
I would say find something to preoccupy your life. If you do, eating will just be a means to an end, and you would not even pay attention to it at all.
But I could be wrong and this is just a phase. Find some friends and bounce this question with them. Maybe some so the same thing, and they can relate. AT any rate, carry on with life, dont make the weight loss your entire life.

Yes, you definitely have an eating disorder.
Here's how to check, but you have to be honest with yourself.
You say that you can control how much you do it. If this is true, tell yourself that you won't do it at all, for a period of time of, oh, say a month. I think you'll find out it's not as much under your control as you think, and that it's on your mind an awful lot when you've promised yourself you won't do it. That's how you know.

yea, its bulimia, dont do it, it will make you go crazy, like terry schiavo, she was bulimic and she went crzy because she was about to throw up her brain or something. try to control how much you eat, and it will make you lose weight. it will also make you loose you teeth and it will make your cheecks all huge from all the purging liquid.and your throat will be very damaged. i am anorexic and i dont eat and i know its bad and i cant purge, nothing comes out even after i eat like a crazy pig. control your meals
