when a guy says something nice to a girl, like "you are the prettiest girl i have ever met", or "i like you with your hair short" when the girl says she hates her haircut, do they mean it?or a they just saying it to be nice?

Maybe not always. They might really mean it, or they may just trying to make us feel better. I felt really crappy one day and my boyfriend told me I looked great and it did help a little. Maybe sometimes they think we need a little lift, don't forget sometimes they need it too! So tell your guy how funny and sexy he is. :)

you do know about mixed emotions right?
a compliment is a compliment, nice is just nice.
the difference in most compliments given by men sometimes come from the heart and not from the lower area by trying to gain points. I can be nice to you all day long,
Oh Belle I love what you did with your hair! or Belle, you have the most prettiest smile!
sometimes the words could be coming from the guy who just wants to get into something with you, or his words could be genuine and just being nice. we men have a trigger by birth that gets us going when ever a girl we like is around, we try not to be disrespectful but in turn, we do and say what we feel is the best approach to gain your favor. all is meant, but at different levels of understanding. men are what I call sex hounds, if you said" I hate my haircut," what response do you think a guy would come with? I hate it to? NO! he'll say what ever to make you feel most important, truth or lie. It's all mixed emotions.

I am sure some guys mean what they say depends if there talking to there girlfriend or some random at the bar. You can tell if a guy is being genuinely caring about what he is saying.

It all depends on what type person you know them to be some people are straight up and straight out and there are others who will try to blow smoke up your a** just to get in your pants so you have to figure out what type of person he really is.

A genuine guy will be telling the truth (probably even flirting with you) when he says things like that.
There are other guys who would just be trying to jump your bones....
