I'm a 30 something adult and this is a relative in her mid 50's who I have not had much contact with since I was a kid. Everytime I tried to walk away from the situation she would follow me and insist that it was disrespectful and hurtful for me to leave before we had "worked everything out". What do you guys think? Is it better to stay and let someone yell at you and refuse to hear your side of the situation because you shouldn't disrespect your elder relatives or should you walk away no matter what their age or relation is if they refuse to stop the verbal abuse? Is there some other solution to the situation that I may not of thought about?

Tell her that she is being disrespectful to you when she yells in your face. Tell her that when she can sit down and hear your side of it, then you will talk to her.

If she won't let you get a word in, try sending her a letter giving your side of things. Then, when she talks to you, ask her if she got the letter and what her response to that is.

The age difference is not so important now as it would be if you were a teen and she were in her 30's. You are both adults and you deserve the same respect from her that she wants from you.

But you probably won't convince her of that! Good luck!

If possible, I'd try to completely avoid the person. If the person persists, tell then they are entitled to their opinion, but not to force it upon you. Your an adult and you have to be assertive about your rights as an individual. Don't let people walk on you. It's not good for you and it lets them believe they can do it to others.

Certainly, what this person deems as "working things out" is not very adult-like. It sounds like this relative is not very reasonable.

Good luck!

Tell her it's disrespectful to yell at you like you're a child, and it's abusive to yell at children. If she's in your house tell her to leave. 50 is not considered an elder.

There is an old saying, "If you're talking, you're not listening." This person sounds like they are bellowing just for the purpose of degrading. It's not conversation that they seek. Don't hang around people that want to hurt you.

Explain to them until they stop acting like a child you have nothing to discuss. And the knuckle sandwich is a final resort.

Be cool and collected but let her know that you are offended and you make take actions later if you are pushed to the edge
