My husband had 3-4 silver fillings replaced with composite just today around 3-4pm, and now suddenly 11:00 at night he is struck with an extreme consistent pain where they did the work. Did they not seal the filling completely??? He is allergic to aspirin so all he has is tylenol. Are there any home remedies to help relieve this pain. Will ice help?? I just don't want to do something that will cause more pain by accident, so I thought I would ask around first. Thanks Poni

Well, composites are meant to bond to the tooth. However, the technique is very sensitive and must be done carefully to succeed. The most common cause of post-op pain after composites is if the composite pulls away from the bottom of the cavity when it is being cured (or set). Composites shrink upon hardening and so the adhesive must be put on with care, and the composite placed in icrements of 2mm or less at a time.
For tonight, all he can have is tylenol with codeine and hopefully it will settle down tomorrow. If the pain persists, discuss it with the dentist. Perhaps he'd be better off with a silver filling if it's not too late.

Generally when you have had work done on teeth such as drilling and filling teeth can be painful for 2-3 days. I have known some people to experience pain for longer. He will need to take an antiinflamatory such as ibuprofen. If it is still painful in a few days consult the dentist. Ice will not help. Cloves are a known home remedies but I've never known it to work on that sort of thing. If he is allergic to aspirin just take panadol or codeine but ibuprofen is the best for dental pain.

I hate to break it to you, but composite fillings are WAY MORE SENSITIVE than silver. I had all my silver ones removed and replaced with composite and I have had nothing but trouble with 2 of them. They are VERY sensative to touch and temperature. They are also not as durable, but are better for your body in the long run. What may be the problem is that they did not file it down correctly to form to his bite. Have him go back to his Dentist and have them do a bite test and I am sure that will alleviate the problem. Most of the time, it does and he can go on his merry way. Good Luck :)

My dentist told me that since i have extremely sensitive teeth.
that any contact from my upper teeth will hurt.

My DENTIST TOLD ME TO RUB VASELINE on my teeth's surface. I did, and this immediately soothed the pain.

Good luck, and try the Vaseline, I thought my dentist was insane!
BUT-- it really worked!

DO CALL THE DENTIST ASAP IN THE AM IF HE'S STILL IN PAIN. they can pull the new fillings out, put an anesthetic filling in for 6 months and then line the filling etc.

I guess that the pain killer they gave him in the shot finally wore off and he is feeling pain from the work that was done. Give him ibuprofen (advil) to ease the swelling.

If it doesn't get better in a day or 2, go back to the dentist, because they may have knicked a nerve, which will require a root canal. Happened to me and my brother thanks to an unexperienced dentist.
