My son is 27 months old, weighs 29.5lbs, and is approx. 35-36inches tall. Is he big enough for a booster seat yet, or should I keep him in his car seat for awhile longer?

Just wondering, because my nephew will be three years old in april, only weighs about 4 lbs more than my son and is approx. 5inches taller, and has been in a booster seat for about six weeks now.

Carseat definitely. Go to this website, and input his information to find out when he can move into a booster seat: http://www.boosterseat.gov/

Most state laws just require your child to be in an approved safety seat of some sort, and follow the manufactures directions on it. If your child is boarder line on size and age then look for a seat that will convert to a full booster when he is just a bit older. Britax has the best seats available, they are made in the UK. but are saftey tested at higher standards the US made ones. If you want a booster with a 5 point harness that goes to 80 lbs, then Britax has one, if you just want a booster that uses your seat belt then Britax has one, seeing the age of your child, I would highly recommend a 5 point harness...especially on those days when a seat is not where the terrible 2's want to keep the angel that is in all of out kids. Good luck britaxusa.net

He definitely needs to stay in a forward facing car seat for a lot longer!! He needs to be much older and much larger before switching to a booster...My 4 year old niece still needs a car seat, so you definitely don't want to be putting a baby less than 3 into a booster yet...Just remember, this is your child's safety we're talking about here: better safe than sorry! It is better to keep a child in a car seat for a bit longer than needed than hurrying and switching to a booster and then having an accident and LO flies out the windshield because the seatbelt doesn't properly hold him.

Keep him in a car seat as long as it's safe to do so (as long as he doesn't exceed the weigh/size limits of the seat). Car seats with 5 point harnesses are much safer than booster seats.

Keep him in a car seat. My son is almost 3 and about 39lbs and he is in a car seat. The thing with booster seats is that if the seat belt fails your child can be thrown out of the car. If you use the 5 point harness and safety straps in addition to the seat belt and the belt fails you still have the harness and straps to keep your child safe. Stick to the strictest safety seat standards to keep your child alive.

Different states have different laws. but, a good rule of thumb is.
When he's 4 yrs old, or 40 lbs...he should be ready for a booster seat.
