Shelby is a unisex name. I have several males named Shelby in my family tree. I don't know if you ever watched Steel Magnolias, but there is a female character named Shelby. There are so many names out there that started out as male names or even surnames that are now used by females. Very often, like with the names Dakota, and Devon you have many boys using the name, followed by an onslaught of girls. Some of the last names used by girls are Taylor, Madison, and Payton. Very rarely do you see a male use a name that is used predominately by females, but there are a few. Look at Haley Joel Osment.(although Haley is also a surname)

It's unisex NOW.
It used to be exclusively male, like many place names and virtually all surnames.

I don't know but I wouldn't give a kid a name like that; too much potential for teasing; sure, it might have been"your favorite uncle's name", but I bet he got teased too.

I don't know for sure, but it seems like that would be pushing it. I think it suits a girl far better.
