The short answer is el nino. El nino is most likely caused BY global warming so both can be equally true. But let me toss a few more tidbits in the mix to keep the rabid anti-global warming freaks from sputtering their nonsense.
#1 Most of the things we currently measure have a very short historical time span. We've only been keeping temperature records for a hundred years or 2. While that seems long to us, thats only because humans have a PATHETICALLY short life span and thus can think only in very short time spans.
#2 The earth has undergone no fewer than a dozen ice ages, and at the opposite end of the spectrum, tropical periods. We happen to be coming off the last ice age and heading into the next tropical period. Our last ice age carved out the great lakes that split the northeastern US and southeastern Canada.
#3 Humans do NOT cause "global warming". Human EGO causes this school of thought but its simply false. Heres where the tree huggers start screaming so heres a few factoids. Humans are responsible for 10% of the global polution. Volcanos are responsible for 90% of global polution. It is ridiculous to think our paltry 10% somehow is upsetting the global balance. Now you think, well what if our 10% sways the balance? It doesn't. Want proof? Take a gander at mars. Recent surveys of the red planet over the past decade have shown something amazing. And you WON'T hear this from the global warming freaks, they want to keep this hush hush. The polar ice caps we're all so familiar with on Mars are RECEDING. Wow, thats right. MARS is experiencing global warming. Well since neither of the pathfinder robots runs on internal combustion, the REAL cause of global warming must be something that affects both the earth AND mars. Guess what that is?
#4 THE SUN causes global warming folks. The sun has 2 distinct cycles it goes through. One is a short term cycle of 11 years, which humans refer to as the Solar Maximum and Solar Minimum. The last Solar Maximum was in 2000. It was evidenced by such wonders as the Northern Lights being visible in my native state of Ohio. The next maximum is in 2011. The sun also has LONG term cycles that man can only estimate as we've only been able to take real peeks at the sun for the past 20 or 30 years. We estimate them to be around 65,000 years or so between long term solar cycles, but we're really not sure. The last minimum output cycle was what caused our last ice age. We're now swinging back towards it's maximum long term cycle and thats why our planet is becoming tropical again. Its likely we'll have palm trees start to migrate northward to the virginias and perhaps even as far north as the ohio river. This should start to happen in the next hundred years or so.
Sorry to burst the tree hugger's bubble here but it's not our fault global warming exists. Some would argue it doesn't exist but thats simply false. It certainly exists but through no fault of ours. Blame the sun. To see how hearty life here on earth really is, realize that our moon was created when earth had for the most part cooled and was stablizing when an object hit the earth with enough impact energy to re-liquify the entire crust into magma once more to make the planet a huge ball of lava in space. Thats a total extinction of every possible life form including bacteria. And yet life bounced back with amazing resiliance.
Life isn't the exception. Its the rule!
If it CAN exist, it will.

The el nino part of your question. It is from under sea lava flow frequently, in the Western Pacific. Temperatures of 5000 to 8000 degrees, enough to heat up 100's of miles of the ocean. The natural currant carries the heated water toward the West coast of the Americas, warming the air also. This is an unpredictable event. There are weather changes on the land, either hot dry, or excess rain. I suppose its effects could affect land all the way to the East coast.
Global warming from CO2 in the upper atmosphere is thought to be the major cause of global warming. Inconvenient truth-- CO2 is heavier than air. CO2 is the basic plant food and is taken up immediately by any and all plants - removed from the air!! So the fuel must be burned above 30,000 ft. Jet engines burn 2-5 tons of kerosene per hr. Each ton of fuel burned produces 3.66 tons of CO2!! Thousands of hours of jet traffic every day over the US alone!! It takes an unknown amt of time to slowly settle down to earth.

It's Al Gore's fault.
All that hot air stationary over the northeast is changing global weather patterns.
