Matthew 5:3. What does this mean? Shouldn't the spiritually strong be blessed instead?

Poor in spirit means that I recognize that in myself, I am nothing. In knowing that I'm nothing spiritually, I will lean on God for ALL of my spiritual need.

If instead, I see myself as "pretty strong in spirit", then I don't seek God in all things, but just when I think the going is getting tough. We are to approach God "as little children." A LITTLE child will simply ask for a bottle of milk. A "pretty strong" child will try to pour it himself and spill it all over the floor. The LITTLE child, seeing himself as "poor in strength" will get the blessing.

Blessed are the meek.
Blessed are those that mourn.

All in all I assume that it's a sermon about humility. The people who are humble and assume that they are not perfect and all knowing....are the ones who are to be considered as worth something in the eyes of the Higher Power.

I don't know for sure....obviously!

In Luke, it just says "poor."

If you reorder the language, Matthew is actually saying "The poor are blessed in spirit." That's how I interpret it.

Go to websites which provide bible teachings. They can give you much clearer interpretation. However, I quite accept the intepretation that the verse means one should have the attitude of humility. If he is humble, he is blessed for the kingdom of God is his. There you are, if you are humble you belong to heavenly citizen. What more would you ask?

I think of it as being humble. Because poor people are humble and grateful for whatever they receive.

i don't know what chapter, verse....but it says "forgive them, for they do not know". just a thought....also, poor in "spirit" could mean that they simply don't have it in them to broadcast it to the world...
