Unless their hands are teeming with bacteria or viruses, probably nothing.

I just finished reading an article about that very subject. The one thing that I don't appreciate is when in a restaurant and friends come over and SHAKE MY HAND. Hey, fool I am eating. When they leave my table I go wash my hands once more. That is not ethical to start with. If you keep your hands away from your mouth, if you do not rub your eyes, and when you go to the bathrooms the paper towel you dry your hands on open the door with it and toss it in the sink, or floor. Believe me I do not do these things, but I do now after reading the article. One other is when you visit a Doctors's office especially during flu season do not even pick up a magizine. Keep your hands off the arm rest if there is one.
I worked in a Lab for six years, and also had to act as "courier" and drive long distances to pickup specimens. In my six years of this I have only seen one Dr. (Female) that had her employees
get "clorox" bleach and wipe down everything in all treatment rooms. Then out came the "Lysol" to kill the smell, and it is used as another bacteria agent. The next time you visit your Doctor just look around at the treatment room. Look in the corners, the floor, and also the table you are on. There is one "staff" germ (sp) out there that there is no cure, nor preventive. The less time you stay in the hospital the better off you will be.

If you have swallowed the dirt, it would depend on your resistant power. If it in your mouth, spit it out, rinse and go about your business. If the hands have not entered the mouth, just wash your face and voila !

Your immune system would probably protect you from whatever funk might get into your mouth.
