my laptop runs a bit slow when using both - is there a product you can use that does both?
I turned off avast and now i have the little red shield saving i am not protected against virus?

Neither one is the best, but you can use both because they are different type of product: one is an antivirus and one is a antispyware. Use this antivirus instead http://www.free-av.com

Avast is a traditional signature based virus scanner that scans and relies on daily virus signature definitions to detect malwares.
Prevx is a community based system using heuristic detection as well as HIPS (Host Intrusion Protection) techniques.
Yes you can use both and they should compliment each other nicely. Providing that you have a "powerful" enough computer to use both without a slowdown. Using both can consume quite a bit of system resources!
