Of the two a miscarriage would have to be something to do with evolution as typically a miscarriage occurs because for some reason the fetus is not viable, frequently this is a chromosome abnormality. If the abnormality is beneficial the child will live and perhaps help to evolve the species, if not, a tragic miscarriage which is most often painful and hard to deal with for the parents.
The fact that miscarriages occur should not be viewed as punishment, it is not anyones fault that they occur, not even God's. From just the single standpoint of genetics, one must comprehend the miracle that occurs, the complex processes involving enormous amounts of information. That it goes right so often is amazing. I must say I am sorry for your loss, but should there have been something wrong with the baby, perhaps it is indeed a blessing they never had to experience life in pain. So I guess my final answer, although I hate to put such a sensitive issue into such classifications, it would be a little of both the things you mentioned.

In some cases a miscarriage is the result of a defect. Perhaps the egg did not get properly attached and nourishment could not reach the infant. Perhaps the infant had a serious defect and could not develope properly so the mothers body released it in the hope of making room for another precious infant to take its place.
I once learned in a science class that we are constantly being bombarded by rays from outer space. I fear that if one ray managed to penetrate a womans body and strike a developing embryo it could do damage such that the infant would have defects. That may not be the cause in all cases but it certainly is a possibility. Then too there are so many chemicals in our environment that could be harmful to a developing fetus that it is cause for concern. Please do not blame God for the bad things that happen here on this earth, He gave us a perfect world to start with and Adam and Eve turned away from that. they allowed their curiosity to corrupt the perfect world God provided. Now everything is messed up and it might seem like God caused it all but it wasn't him, it was "the dark side".

There is no comparison between natural death and deliberate killing. All of us will die, but not all of us will be dismembered alive by our parents. Comparing miscarriage to abortion is like comparing dying in your sleep to being hacked apart by an axe murderer.

Abortion is completely unjustifiable when you think about it rationally, so it is not surprising that people attempt to justify it with bizarre, illogical arguments.

It's not complicated. Killing innocent human beings is wrong. Abortion kills innocent human beings:

God is not in the abortion business.

Miscarriages are the result of human frailty and imperfections, and for many, they are a great, great tragedy.

Not something to be dealt with lightly.

Although loosing a child is a horrible emotional experience, it probably is no different from a scientific stand point from a crop, plant or seed that didn't mature for whatever the reason might be.

neither, it's medical or biological- nothing deep, dark or sinister here- no secret trysts or meaningful metaphysics here, a tragedy for expectant mother and dead baby- why go chasing elusive answers with surreal questions.
