Especially if they don't ask you first. That drives me crazy. Talk to you brother (sounds like that is where the relation is) and tell him what is going on. Tell him he needs to talk to his wife and kids. If he was raised the same as you, he should understand. If it still doesn't get rectified, don't eat with them anymore. Or go out of your way to be far enough away they can't reach over and grab anything. If they attempt to, pick up your plate and walk away.

It is unacceptable and rude and apparently they are allowed to get away with it at home. Good luck to them in society if they keep it up! The next time they come over for a meal, serve the food on different colored plates. Somehow each plate should differ from the other. Explain that this is a special meal and that each plate has food cooked just for its own colored plate. The food has requested to stay on its own colored plate. Once a plate of a certain color is gone, more food is available if needed but only from the serving dishes. If the rule is broken the food will be so unhappy that it will not allow desserts. You are telling them the rules in your house in a joking manner but kids usually respond to games like this depending on the age.

Your sister in law has not taught her children manners. What concerns me is that the children may think that this acceptable behavior. If these children are at school and grab some food off the plate of another child, either there could a fight or the child will get in a lot of trouble. Then this child will be confused because he thought it was acceptable. You may want to being this to your sister-in-laws attention. I bet she will be embarrassed when she gets a call from school

No, it is not. It is rude and very unfair to that person. While there have been television shows that might suggest this to be okay behavior, would you want it done to you? If not, then restrain yourself. Besides, someone might take offense and hit you for your actions. If that turns you on, to be clobbered for such actions, then I guess you would do the grabbing anyway. There are people in the world that enjoy having pain inflicted upon themselves.

Absolutely not acceptable!! You must tell them not to touch your food, be firm but not angry.
No one should touch an others plate unless that person invites them to do so, like sharing fries, whether you do it while eating or after you have finished, that is your prerogative.

Than tell them that!!!! This is the way she was probably raised. Not a big deal for some people, but a big deal for others. You gotta just be kind and truthful and the situation will be over.

To be blunt, it's inexcusable.
But, because these grabbers are kids (I hope the sister-in-law is not doing it!), and you are not the parent, it would be just as rude for you to criticize their horrendous manners.
Here's what to do: realize that you are armed and dangerous: you have a fork! I humbly suggest that you stab any wandering hands making a run for your garlic bread. Naturally, you'll want to pass it off as casual family fun, but make your (heh heh) point!
Good luck!

If you don't like it, it's not okay with you.
I wouldn't do it unless I had a previous history of sharing a lot with the person.
