It's called 'chaos magick' because its followers were essentially rebels against pagan ceremonial magick. Because pagan/wiccan ceremonial magick has the maxim 'as it harm none, do what thou will', some wanted to 'subvert' that teaching and thought to do so meant to sow 'chaos'. It has a strong supporter in Aleister Crowley, but he was always a renegade pagan to begin with, and his rebellions against any authority were not without their own trappings.

The theory is not actually an instigator of 'chaos' because it only presupposes that by following such a theory, one can only promote chaos. Hardly true. Imagine, if you will, someone who desires to be a burglar. It is entirely plausible that someone, somewhere else, will (by the very same 'do what you will' theory) decide to become a cop. By following the exact same principal, not only are they NOT creating chaos, they are actually working to create balance.

Chaos Magick theory was essentially created by the people who wanted to become burglars, never imagining the very same theory could be used to create 'cops' as well. It is Chaos Magick only to those inclinded to create chaos regardless.

"But I myself believe in whatever comes in handy."

One of my favorite qualities of CMT is that you can apply it to your current worldview, or use it to help change your perspective in whatever way you choose through the deconstruction of personality and belief systems.
