My 11 year old daughter has what appears to be a swollen gland under her right jaw bone. It isn't very obvious, but she says it hurts a little and you can certainly feel the difference in size between the left and right jaw line. Any ideas on what this might be?
I am planning to take her for a visit to the Doctors office next week to check it out.

How are her teeth and tonsils? It's probably a lymph node and she has an infection or virus of some kind, check her temperature and ask if her ears hurt and see how her teeth look in that area.

I get that too sometimes. It's probably because the lymph nodes are fighting off and infection or sickness of some sort. That's what the lymph nodes are made for, helping fight off infections and sickness. Lots of times when I get those in my jaw they usually come along with a canker sore in my mouth right above where the swollen lymph node is. Maybe your daughter is getting a canker sore or something. It'll most likely go away before you even take her to the doctor next week. They usually only stay swollen about 3 or 4 days at the most. If it's gone you could still take her and describe to the doctor what was wrong and he could still diagnose it I'm sure.

I have had the same thing for several years now, just to the inside of my jawbone and next to the neck. It started out just on the right side, but over the last year or so the left side matches. You can't see either, only feel.

I was told it was just a swollen lymph node, nothing serious, and that it's fairly common.

Don't worry too much, but go to the doctor just in case. You never know.

i would say for sterters that it is a swollen lymph node. Has she complained about a jaw tooth hurting her? It could be tonsils also, if she still has them. I would say just a minor problem, but what do I know. Go to Doctor. Rody

You should take her to a doctor, since those glands usually swallow when there is something wrong (flu, an infection, anything). Usually both glands will swallow, so only 1 swallowing is quite peculiar.
