cropping means that the ears are trimmed to stand up into points.

This is entirely up to you, but must be done at a young age for propper healing and cartlidge developement. Usually 6-11 weeks is the right age, however don't think that cropping your dog's ears will make him a true great dane, the ears don't make the great dane, the spirit of the dog and its build do. There are rumors that a dane with cropped ears doesn't develope things like ear mites, however a dane with normal ears doesn't develope an infection from inproper cropping. The process is painful, however can be clean and easy if you get the pup at the right age. When picking a vet to do your dog's ears, be very careful because some will take cheap shortcuts and try to save a buck by using no anesthesia. Pick your vet wisely. Either way you chose, ears should be cleaned on a monthly basis, no matter what, simply because of ear mites and dust that collects.

My personal opinion: I love floppy ears!

There is no good reason for cropping, not even to show. Cropping needs to be done by an experinced vet and before the puppy is 12 weeks old. It is very difficult to find a vet that does ear cropping. The AVMA/AAHA do not condone ear cropping any longer nor is it taught in vet schools. A bad crop job can be a whole lot worse then leaving them natural. Also cropping takes lots of time taping, watching for infection, etc .It can takes anywhere from a month to over a year of taping to get ears to stand and even then many don't.

More and more Great Danes aren't being cropped and many are earning their AKC championships with natural ears and are going on to be specialed. A lot of breeders are no longer cropping. The breed standard, while they do have a written standard for cropped ears don't require it (they have a written standard for natural ears as well).

I've owned/shown Danes for years. I've had both cropped & natural. I personally won't have any of mine cropped any more. I'm currently showing my natural eared Dane pup successfully.

UMMMM NO !!! Have you ever been around a dog that has had to go through that?? Its not fun and it is painful--and if you have no intentions of ever showing this dog then NO--I don't want to go off on a tangent here but I have always had a problem with the tail docking and ears cropping--what ever--if the animals could talk do you think for one min they would say--"Oh and by the way could you cut off a piece of my body??' Really?? The dogs ear flaps protect them from dirt and cold air entering the ear canal and the tails are for balance--I know that the dog breeders and show judges have standards for show but who made these standards?? Not the dogs--want to take it a step further as to what humans do for the sake of a pretty show?? How about breaking a tail of a gaited horse so that when they lift it up it falls down perfectly strait--who cares?? really--I guess you get the hint I say NO leave the poor dogs body parts intact --Thank you

NO! That's so sad. I had a mix pit bull and we didn't crop his ear's or his tail and he looked so much more friendlier than most pitts. You're dog will look unique and he'll love you for not putting him through that pain.

its your choice.. it might look nice. However it is an extremely painful procedure and there is no guarantee that the ears will stand. Its expensive too! Hope it works out!

Well most Great Danes do have thier ears cropped...my Rottwieler has it's tail docked. Its just for looks its up to you. Personally I think its better when a breed looks all teh same and Great Danes do get thier ears cropped! All the time! Just like Rottweilers getting thier tails docked..

Hope this helps,
Joey

it does look a bit cute, but,
I wouldn't crop their ears if it were my puppies!
they could look cuter if their ears were left to be floppy!

no! it hurts them really bad, and there is no need for it other than the owner wants it!

I had a dane...and his ears weren't cropped and he looked so much cuter...kept his "puppyness" about him much longer...plus their ears get all long, its suepr cute
