Actually it's a translation from the Greek "ΙΧΘΗΥΣ" meaning fish. It was an acronym for "Ιησους Χρηστος Θεου Υιος Σωτηρ" "Jesus Christ Son of God Savior" and was used by the early Christians as an Identification. Do not forget that at the time the lingua international was Greek. The original Bible was written in Greek.

The Jesus Fish is actually an ancient symbol called the Vesica Pisces. It was used by Christians to identify themselves to one another in days when it was dangerous to be Christian. One person would make the symbol of one side of the fish in the sand and if the person they were speaking to what also Christian, they would answer with the other side of the fish.
Interestingly enough, the astrological sign of Pisces is closely related to Christianity and the Age of Pisces has just ended after 2000 years - we are now in the Age of Aquarius (characterized most popularly with the internet). These are interesting times, indeed.
Peace!

Christians seem to like weird words and symbols. Agape (pronounced a-gap-ay) The fish....so we will remember the fish and bread trick...speaking in tongues...stuff like that. The more confused the members of the church are, the stronger the belief. It is an abuse of basic psychology.
Like the oneness of God...in the Trinity...Virgins having children and so on. It is a nice philosophy, but a bogus religion.

A while ago when Christians were being persecuted they had to find a way to fellowship. So they would stand in the sand with a curved line drawn infront of them. (Half of the fish) then someone who was a Christian would see it, understand and draw the other half of the fish. Then they would go off to talk about Jesus.

After Jesus's death, and Resurrection. there were places in the world (still are) where it was illegal to worship him and it became dangerous. so when you talked to someone and you wanted to know if they were a christian too you would draw an arch in the dirt (half of the fish) if the other person completed the arch they were a christian and safe to talk to.
I don't know why that symbol was chosen though, that is just the story behind it.
hope it helps

Jesus spoke parables using the fish as a symbol many times through out the bible. That is why Christians have the fish symbol.

Back in the day, in order to aviod persecution, christians would draw a fish symbol in the dirt to see if people passing by recognized it. If someone walking by copied the fish symbol in the dirt, it mint they, too, were a follower of god.

I can't tell you - it's a secret for Christians.
Really, it was a secret way for 2 believers to identify themselves to each other. One would draw in the dirt one "curve" with his toe. The other would complete the "fish" with the other "curve", and then they would know that they could trust each other.
