My son has just finished pre-school and learnt a little about religion. I didn't disagree with anything he said, except when he said that if you don't believe in God you are mean, and that makes God cry and thats what rain is. I asked him who told him that, and that it was crap. Apart from that, I will let him choose what he wants to belive, just as my parents did to me and my siblings

Ive been thinking this one over in my head. I would probably make him study religion. So he could understand it but tell him to never make a choice till he was older. There is no biblical god though and i would not want my child to hear such awful things that the bible teaches. So i am not exactly sure. I will definitely teach my child to be open minded and to always look at things with scrutiny but to be optomistic too. I dont think i would want to teach him religion though cause kids beleive anything they hear. Santa clause the tooth fairy the easter bunny

Once again.
I don't say "There is no God". I say that I do not believe that God exists. There is a difference.
I have two sons aged 13 and 14. The younger is religious, the elder is not. They made those decisions on their own. I would never teach my children anything about religion, except to explain how different belief systems address different questions.

I plan to marry an atheist or weak theist and raise my children normally. I simply won't teach that there is a god. But I won't teach there is NO god just as I plan to not say there are no unicorns, fairies, dragons, etc. If they ask then I'll tell them it's a story - a myth like all the others.
Do you tell YOUR children there is no large invisible purple alien whispering into their ear?

I tell them that I do not believe in God, but that they need to think for themselves. My parents taught me that I should think on my own, even though they were Christians..I am forever in their debt.

both.
my kid is three, so it hasn't come up yet. my plan is to teach him that there are many different philosophies on the subject, and no doubt during the course of that discussion he'll want to know my personal take on it, and I'll tell him, but also explain that it's a question each individual must look within his own heart and mind to answer.
thumbs down? what do you suggest I do? not that I care to follow your suggestions, but I'm curious. email me your ideas, if you have the cajones.

Let them decide to believe in God if they want to believe in God. Part of much of atheism is not forcing beliefs on anyone or brainwashing, unlike a lot of the other perspective.

Gods and religion was not a part of our life... my parents just left it open for me to make my own choice on what I believe, or don't. And I would do the same with my own kids.
