The divorce rate for step families is five times that of first marriages. Though it has a lot to do with the differences with exes, there is more to it than that. A study done at the university of Missouri in Columbia resulted in the production of a questionnaire that should be used before such a marriage. I have a copy if anyone wants it.

Cos sometimes when a family falls away in discord for whatever reason, the baggage from that is carried on with them whether in life of their own from there or united with another or another family unit - adding baggage to baggage.
There is no way that a family dissolved and there was no affect.
Then to expect children to click into place just cos the parents did is not realistic.
When children are especially young sometimes this does work out but with older children much more difficult for carry heartache from breakup of their own unit...often causing further lack of trust or faith in next combination.
Rare folks make rare families tho!

because for better or worse it's the reality that many parents and children find themselves in, and must make the best of.
